Work with the ArcGIS StoryMaps assistant (beta)

The ArcGIS StoryMaps assistant (beta) contains the following tools that use artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the process of creating content with ArcGIS StoryMaps:

  • Accessibility assistant—Suggests alternative (alt) text by analyzing an image.
  • Insights assistant—Analyzes the story content and provides information including a summary and a classification of its tone, sentiment, estimated reading time, readability level, and more.
  • Writing assistant—Regenerates selections of text, adjusting aspects such as tone, length, and grammar.
  • Theme assistant—Creates a custom theme based on keywords or a description.

Get started

The following subsections describe how to get started with each AI tool.

Note:

Your ArcGIS Online administrator must configure assistants before you can access the ArcGIS StoryMaps assistant (beta), including turning off the Block Esri apps and capabilities while they are in beta setting.

Accessibility assistant

To get started with the Accessibility assistant (beta) tool, complete the following steps:

  1. Upload an image or provide a link to an image on the web in the story builder.

    The Accessibility assistant tool is available in Image options.

  2. Click the Accessibility tab in the Image options modal.
  3. Click the Suggest (beta) button.

The image from your story is analyzed and alt text is generated for the image. You can edit or discard the suggested alt text.

Insights assistant

To get started with the Insights assistant (beta) tool, complete the following steps:

  1. Open a story that contains text in the story builder.
  2. Click the Insights button in the story builder header.

    The About this story section contains an analysis of the story content that has been authored up to this point. This section contains gist, tone, sentiment, word count, estimated reading time, readability level, languages detected, keywords and places mentioned in the story.

  3. Click the Update item description button to update the description section of the ArcGIS item details page with the gist from this section.
Note:

The Insights assistant (beta) tool is only generated if your story contains more than 100 words and is only supported for English language.

Writing assistant

To get started with the Writing assistant (beta) tool, complete the following steps:

  1. Open a story that contains text in the story builder.
  2. Select a paragraph of text, and click the Assistant button.
  3. In the Writing assistant (beta) modal, select one of the actions, Rephrase, Summarize, Change tone, or Fix grammar, to update the tone and style of your writing.
  4. Once you're satisfied with the results, click Replace to replace the original text with the result.
Note:

The Writing assistant is only available for paragraph text blocks.

Theme assistant

To get started with the Theme assistant (beta) tool, complete the following steps:

  1. On the My Projects page in ArcGIS StoryMaps, choose Theme.
  2. Click the New Theme button on the Themes page.
  3. Click the Theme assistant (beta) card from the Select a starting point options.
  4. Provide a phrase or set of keywords to describe the theme you want to create.
  5. Click Generate.

    A theme is generated with suitable colors, fonts, basemap, and block styles to match the description provided.

  6. Click Resuggest to get other suggestions or click Select & customize to edit the theme variables in the theme builder.

Credits

Using the ArcGIS StoryMaps assistant (beta) does not consume credits.

Feedback

To provide feedback on the ArcGIS StoryMaps assistant, click the Help button, and choose the Feedback option. Your feedback will be considered to guide further development.

Security and privacy

The ArcGIS StoryMaps assistant (beta) aligns with the following principles:

  • Prompts are not used to train Esri or third-party AI models.
  • Prompts are not used to improve any Esri or third-party product or service.
  • Prompts are not stored or shared.
  • Prompts are not used to improve the assistant for your own use.

AI transparency cards are available with more security and privacy details.

Limitations and bias

Suggestions generated using AI can be misleading or inaccurate. To avoid potentially reinforcing any unintentional biases in the AI models used by the ArcGIS StoryMaps assistant (beta), human judgement should be applied to interpreting and acting on the assistant's outputs.
