Introduction to Adopt-A-Hydrant

Adopt-A-Hydrant can be used to operate hydrant adoption programs that allow volunteers to adopt hydrants and keep them free from obstructions like snow or vegetation.

Heavy snowfall, or tall grass and shrubs, make fire hydrants difficult to locate quickly. While routine hydrant maintenance ensures hydrants are more accessible, the sheer volume of hydrants in a community makes it difficult to ensure every hydrant is accessible during the summer and winter months.

Many communities have implemented hydrant adoption programs to mitigate these risks. These programs help fire departments, and water utilities, keep hydrants clear of snow and vegetation. Adopt-A-Hydrant programs leverage volunteers to regularly remove these obstructions around hydrants. In some cases, volunteers may be asked to check on an adopted hydrant after a snowstorm or during the summer months when grass and shrubs grow quickly. This simple action can impact the time it takes firefighters to access a hydrant during an emergency.

The Adopt-A-Hydrant solution delivers a set of capabilities that help you enlist community volunteers to clear obstructions around hydrants, manage program participants, and monitor the performance of the adoption program.
