Introduction to Wildfire Protection Planning

Wildfire Protection Planning can be used to analyze historical wildfire patterns, evaluate their effects on structures, and prioritize mitigation efforts that minimize wildfire impacts and safeguard people and property.

Wildland fires are a formidable natural hazard that can be difficult to prevent and challenging to control. The rising incidence and intensity of wildfires, coupled with expanding development in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI), underscore the necessity for communities to proactively prepare for wildfire hazards.

To mitigate the impact of wildfires, many communities will formally assess wildfire risk and identify effective mitigation activities. Communities with high wildfire risk may develop a formal Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) that is designed to reduce wildfire risks and enhance the safety of residents, properties, and natural resources in areas prone to wildfires. Maps are a major component of these standard reports, and spatial analysis is required to understand risk and identify mitigation activities.
