Introduction to Electric Distribution Inspections

Electric Distribution Inspections can be used to organize overhead and underground electric equipment inspection programs and understand equipment conditions.

Most electric systems use a mix of overhead and underground electric distribution to deliver power. Overhead power distribution is accomplished with equipment like transformers, reclosers, and switches attached to utility poles. Underground power distribution equipment includes transformers, junction boxes, and switches, which are typically pad mounted.

Inspection of overhead and underground electric equipment is essential for utilities to deliver safe and reliable power. A routine inspection program helps electric utilities identify and address defects before equipment fails. To run an effective inspection program, electric utilities must identify where inspections are needed, organize work into manageable campaigns, provide intuitive apps for field inspections, and deliver insight that help the entire organization understand equipment condition.
