Work with space-use types

A space-use type describes the usage of a space in a building. Space-use types are assigned to building spaces and surfaces and can be restricted by zoning or land-use types.

You can edit existing space-use types and propose new ones while editing a plan. Proposed space-use types are only available in the corresponding plan; they are not available across the entire city.

Add a space-use type

You can add a space-use type in the development mode Development or in the plan configuration. Use the development mode option to add types one by one. Use the import options in the plan configuration to add multiple types from a hosted feature table or a spreadsheet.

Development mode

To add a new space-use type in the development mode Development, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Click Development Development in the upper right corner of the header.
  3. Ensure that the side panel on the right is expanded.

To show or hide the panel, click the Expand button Expand at the upper right of the view.

  4. Click Building and space use types Zoning types in the upper right corner of the side panel.

The side panel shows two tabs. The Building types tab is open by default. It lists the building types for the plan.

  5. Click the Space use types tab in the side panel.

The side panel lists the available space-use types for the plan.

  6. Click the Add button Add button in the upper right corner of the side panel.

The New space use type dialog box appears.

  7. Provide a label and a description and populate the other space-use type parameter values.
  8. Click OK.

The new space-use type is added to the Space use types tab in the side panel with a proposal flag next to its name.

Plan configuration

To add new space-use types to the plan configuration, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Expand the drop-down menu named after the plan and select Configure plan.

The plan configuration opens to the general plan settings tab by default.

  3. Click Development and click Space use types.
  4. Click Add and choose from the available options:
    • Single item—Add a single space-use type.
    • From spreadsheet—Import multiple types from a spreadsheet.
    • From feature table—Import multiple types from a hosted feature table.

See Manage space-use types to learn more about these options.

  5. Click Return to plan Return to plan in the header when you finish adding types.

Add a space-use type based on an existing type

There are two places where you can add a space-use type based on an existing type: in the development mode Development or in the plan configuration.

Development mode

To add a new space-use type based on an existing type in the development mode Development, complete the following steps:

  6. Click the Configure button Configure button of a space-use type.

The Space use type dialog box appears that lists the parameters of the selected space-use type.

  7. Scroll to the bottom of the dialog box.
  8. Click the Create duplicate button Copy in the lower left corner.
  9. Provide a label for the duplicate space-use type and edit the other space-use type parameters according to your requirements.
  10. Click OK.

The duplicate space-use type is added to the Space use types tab in the side panel with a proposal flag next to its name.

Plan configuration

To add a space-use type based on an existing type in the plan configuration, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Expand the drop-down menu named after the plan and select Configure plan.

The plan configuration opens to the general plan settings tab by default.

  3. Click Development and click Space use types.
  4. Click the Configure button Configure button of a space-use type.

The Space use type dialog box appears that lists the parameters of the selected space-use type.

  5. Scroll to the bottom of the dialog box.
  6. Click the Create duplicate button Copy in the lower left corner.
  7. Provide a label for the duplicate space-use type and edit the other space-use type parameter values according to your requirements.
  8. Click OK.

The duplicate space-use type is added to the table of space-use types.

Modify a space-use type

You can modify space-use types in the development mode Development or in the plan configuration. To modify a space-use type from the list of types in the development mode, complete the following steps:

Note:
See the Add a space use type section above to learn how to get to the list of types.

  1. Click the Configure button Configure button next to the space-use type you want to modify.
  2. Modify the parameters.
  3. Click OK.

The changes are applied to the space-use type.

Modifying a space-use type impacts existing spaces and surfaces of that type depending on the space-use type parameter you edited:

  • Label, Description, Color, Net area factor, and Metric parameters—The edits are applied automatically to building spaces and surfaces of that type.
  • Default floor height—The edits are not applied automatically to building spaces and surfaces of that type. Re-apply building types that contain the edited space-use type to parcels (see Assign building types) and re-assign the edited space-use type to building spaces or surfaces (see Draw and edit spaces) to make your changes effective.
  • Area per dwelling unit—The edits are not applied automatically if the space-use type is being used in a Dwelling units building type. Otherwise, the edits are applied automatically.
Note:

When modifying an existing space-use type, the changes are only applied to the current plan.

Analyze space use

To see a list of the total area per space-use type and each space-use type's share of the total new floor area in the scenario or in a subset of parcels, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. From the scenario switcher in the center of the header bar, select the scenario for which you want to see the space-use statistics.
  3. Click Development Development in the upper right corner of the view.
  4. Choose from the following options:
    • Don't select parcels—The statistics are shown for all parcels inside the study area. If parcels are (partially) outside the study area, a warning label appears in the Space use in study area section of the side panel. Hover over the warning label to highlight those parcels.
    • Select a subset of parcels—The statistics are shown for the selected parcels.
  5. Hover over the horizontal space-use types bar in the side panel and explore each space-use type's share of the total new floor area.
  6. Click the space-use type in the list below the horizontal space-use types bar.

The view expands and shows more details about the corresponding space-use type: Name, New floor area (in scenario/in selection), and Parameters that are used to calculate metrics (see Work with the dashboard to learn more about metrics).
