Release notes for Urban June 2020

The updates below have been made in ArcGIS Urban.

General

  • You can share individual design plans and projects with different groups.
  • The Line of sight tool analyzes different views and what may block them.
  • A new start page displays all available urban models.
  • You can create a copy of your plan or project by saving it as your own item.

Overview improvements

  • Filter your plans and projects by who can access them using the toggle button.
  • Improved feedback on plans and projects.
  • You can use the Switch Urban Model button in the options menu to get back to the start page.
  • Improved ToolTip content for plans and projects show the access level of the item.

Plan editing

  • Create land use plans based on existing and future land use.
  • Validate zoning plans using existing or future land use.
  • Convert parcels with discrete boundaries into a grid of customizable size.
  • Assign land use types or zoning types to parcels more efficiently.
  • Assign a custom building types combination to a set of selected parcels.
  • Add design context for web scenes to individual branches.

Project editing

  • Add and edit LOD1 project buildings directly in Urban (beta).
  • Add ground layers and 3D symbols (trees, vehicles, street furniture) to your project layout.
  • Undo and redo functionality for an improved drawing experience.

Capacity indicators

  • Calculate the number of parking spots in your design and compare it to the required parking.
  • Make sure your plan designs fulfill requirements regarding energy use and CO2 emissions.
  • Assess the number of daily trips and define different modal splits per scenario.
  • Calculate internal and external water use as well as wastewater and solid waste of your design.
  • For land use plans, calculate the potential of the land use based on the parcel area and the land use type parameters FAR (nonresidential) and DUA (residential).

Urban rule

  • Define and apply skyplanes to zoning envelopes and plausible buildings.
  • Align your buildings to one or two parcel edges.
  • Restrict the building footprint by adding maximum and minimum length and width.

Data manager

  • Add existing buildings for the satellite visualization.
  • The set default view button is now in the General section overview of the data manager, not in the Share dialog box.
  • Support has been added for mass deleting of types and mass editing of project status.
  • Define different categories for public feedback and select from a set of icons to be displayed.
  • Upload land use types as well as existing and future land use geometries.

Breaking changes

  • Data schema has been updated. You must migrate all existing urban models before they can be opened again. There is a guided migration workflow available when opening an urban model that has not been migrated.

Deprecation

  • The Ideas mode is deprecated and replaced with a capability for Plan or Project specific feedback.
  • Nonpublic Custom Indicators are not supported anymore.
  • Zoning envelopes have been removed from the data model. They are created on the fly and not persisted (unless they are published).
  • Configuration has been removed from the data model. The configuration values are now saved as data in the urban model item.

Enhancements and bug fixes

  • A plan validation message appears when entering a plan with invalid data entries.
  • Show or hide the custom base layers when entering an indicator (previously, the default was switching off the custom base layers when entering an indicator).
  • You can preview dwelling unit settings when you create them.
  • Renamed Custom ID to Join ID in the data manager where applicable.
  • New and improved color picker throughout the app.
  • Geometry tools are grouped in one button when editing plans.
  • Warning labels are turned off by default when editing plans.
  • Export to Web Scene adds layer symbology to feature layers.
  • Display and edit coverage in percentages instead of decimals between 0 and 1.
  • Added target distribution to Allowed Space Use Types to handle land use potential calculation.
  • Bug fix: Show street view layers on top of custom base layers.
  • Bug fix: Masking of existing buildings and trees for scenarios other than the first scenario.
  • Bug fix: Import of SingleUseOnly for Space Use Types.
  • Bug fix: Automatic field matching in the data manager.
  • Bug fix: Export to Web Scene uses paging to handle large plans.

Known limitations

Spatial indexes not generated correctly for new feature layers

Because of an integration issue between ArcGIS API for JavaScript and ArcGIS REST API, both of which are used by ArcGIS Urban, spatial indexes are not built correctly when a feature layer is created in ArcGIS Online before the end of June 2020. As a result, an error may occur when you try to display a large number of parcels in the view. This limitation is relevant in the following situations:

  • Migrating an urban model to the latest version.
  • Creating an urban model based on the Empty template or the USA Default template.
  • Creating large scale plans or projects (with more than approximately 10,000 parcels).

As a workaround, complete the following steps:

  1. Sign in to ArcGIS Online.
  2. Switch to the Content tab.
  3. Locate the feature layer.
    • For migrated or new urban models, locate the Urban Database feature layer.
    • For new plans, locate the Urban Design Plan feature layer.
    • For new projects, locate the Urban Design Project feature layer.
  4. Click the name of a feature layer to open its item page.
  5. Click Settings in the upper right corner.
  6. Scroll down to the Manage Spatial Indexes section.
  7. Click Rebuild Indexes.
  8. Select all layers.
  9. Click Rebuild.
