Distribution

The options on the distribution page of the Survey123 website are used by authors to specify which submission app, and which version of the survey, are used to submit records.

Submission apps

The survey author can choose which app—Survey123 Mobile, the Survey123 web app, or the Survey123 field app—is used to submit records.

The following are the default submission apps that are automatically checked when publishing from each authoring app:

  • Survey123 StudioSurvey123 Mobile, the web app, and the field app
  • The web designer—The web app and the field app
  • Survey123 Connect—The web app and the field app

Survey authors can check or uncheck the Survey123 Mobile or the Survey123 web app check boxes. The field app does not support this setting and cannot be unchecked.

Note:

When the option to not create a web form is selected in Survey123 Studio and Survey123 Connect, the Survey123 web app option cannot be checked.

Web app version

Every version of Survey123 includes incremental fixes and enhancements to the web app that change its behavior. As these may cause undesired changes to your survey, Survey123 supports locking a survey version, keeping the functionality for an individual survey at the same web app version to which it was published.

To control the web app version used for a specific survey, click the Settings tab for your survey in the lower right of the survey's panel on the My Surveys page. It opens to the Distribution tab.

Web app version tab on Survey123 website

For newly published surveys, the default is Always use the latest version. For surveys published at version 3.25 or earlier, the default is Use the version the survey was published with.

Note:

Archived web app versions are only available for Survey123 version 2.8 and later for surveys published in the web designer, or Survey123 version 3.0 and later for surveys published in Survey123 Connect.

If your survey was published with version 2.6 or version 2.7, you can only use the latest version of the web app. Surveys published with version 2.5 or earlier are no longer supported and must be republished with the latest version of Survey123 before they can be opened in the web app.

If the option to use the latest web app is chosen, the survey is dynamically upgraded when the page loads, potentially leading to increased load times. You can eliminate this issue by republishing the survey, which allows you to continue using the same feature layer.

Making changes to your survey and republishing it updates it to the latest version. It isn't possible to retain use of the archived web app version while republishing. Before making your changes and republishing, consider using the version control to test your survey in the latest version of the web app to ensure that your existing survey still behaves as expected.

Survey version in the field app

This option is used by survey authors to require users of the field app to update the survey to the latest version. Users will not be able to access the survey until it has been updated.
