Select features

Selecting features on a map provides a way to identify, locate, and visually analyze a set or subset of data on the map.

There are several selection tools to help you select features on the map.

Tip:

If you need to adjust the map view while selecting features, click Pan Pan to deactivate the selection tool and pan the map. Then, click the appropriate tool to resume feature selection.

Select features

To select features on a map, do the following:

  1. At the top of the layer list, select Layer options Layer options.

    The layer options appear.

  2. If necessary, select the layer you want to modify using the Active layer drop-down menu.
  3. From the layer options, choose Select features Select features.

    The Select features pane appears.

  4. Use one of the following selection tools:

    Note:
    For point features, only features that are completely within the selection area are included in the selection.

    Pan
    • Drag the map view to a different location while making selections.
    • Click a feature using the Pan tool to open the feature's pop-up, if pop-ups are enabled.
    Select by rectangle
    • Drag a rectangle on the map to select features within the shape.
    • Press Ctrl and drag to add or remove multiple features from the current selection.
    • Press Esc to cancel drawing.
    • Click anywhere on the map to clear all selections.
    Select by circle
    • Drag a circle on the map to select features within the shape.
    • Press Ctrl and drag to add or remove multiple features from the current selection.
    • Press Esc to cancel drawing.
    Select by polygon
    • Click to draw points on the map. Double-click to stop drawing and complete the polygon, selecting all features inside the area of the shape.
      Note:

      A minimum of three vertices are required to draw a polygon.

    • Optionally, press Ctrl while drawing to enable snapping.
    • Press Esc to cancel drawing.
    Select by freehand polygon
    • Drag a shape on the map to select features within the shape.
    • Press Ctrl and drag to add or remove multiple features from the current selection.
    • Press Esc to cancel drawing.
    • Click anywhere on the map to clear all selections.
    Clear selection
    • Clear all selections.

Considerations

Keep the following in mind when selecting features:

  • If the active layer is styled using clustering or a heat map, the selection tools are not enabled. Turn off clustering or choose a different style for the layer to enable selection on the layer.
  • When working with a time-aware layer, remember that selection tools only select features that are currently visible on the map. Features that appear earlier or later in the time animation must be added to your selection separately.
