Configure and view tooltips

A tooltip displays attribute information based on the field values that you've added to your map visualization. Tooltips display when you hover over a location on the map or when you click a location on a reference or drive-time area layer.

Configure tooltips

To configure tooltips, do the following:

  1. On a map-enabled report, click the ArcGIS for Power BI visualization to activate it.
  2. Click Fields in the Visualizations pane.
  3. Drag a data field into the Tooltips field well.

The tooltip associated with a location displays information about the location based on the field values added to the map. For example, if you filled the Location field well using a location field that includes address, city, state, and ZIP Code, this information appears in the tooltip next to the name of the location data field. If you placed a revenue field in the Size field well, this information also appears in the tooltip. Fields placed in the Tooltips field well also appear in the tooltip.

    Note:

If the map is styled using Heat Map or Clustering, tooltips are available only for pins, reference layers, and drive-time area layers.

  4. To change the order in which tooltips appear, drag an item to a new position in the Tooltips field well.

Location information always appears at the top of the tooltip.

  5. Save the report.
Tip:

You can also use ArcGIS for Power BI maps in a tooltip. Learn how to create tooltips based on report pages in Power BI Desktop.

    Note:

If the map is styled using the Heat Map or Clustering theme, tooltips are available only for pins, reference layers, and drive-time area layers.

  2. To view a tooltip from a reference layer, click a polygon on the reference layer.

A tooltip appears, displaying information configured by the layer's author.

    Note:

Reference layer tooltips only appear on reference layers when the map is in the default selection mode (single-select mode) or multiselect mode. If the Select on drive-time layer tool is active, only tooltips from the data layer appear.
