Select locations on the map

The selection tools on the ArcGIS for Power BI visualization allow report or dashboard authors and consumers to interact with other visualizations by selecting locations on the map.

Note:

Click the Selection tools button Expand selection tools to display the selection tools pane.

Selection tools pane

There are eight selection tools available; different tools may appear in the selection tools pane, depending on the type of layer that is currently active.

Select a single location Select a single location on the map

This is a single-selection tool that can be used to click individual locations. It is the default selection tool.

  • Click a location to select it.
  • To add or remove locations, press Ctrl and click a location.
  • Clicking data locations on the map selects them and triggers interactions with other visualizations.
  • Clicking a pin or a location on a reference layer displays its tooltip.
Select by rectangle Select by rectangle

This is a tool that can be used to select multiple locations within a shape.

  • Drag a rectangle on the map to select multiple locations within the rectangle.
  • Press Ctrl and drag to add or remove multiple locations from the current selection.
  • When the Select by rectangle tool Select by rectangle is active, you cannot pan the map.
  • Press Esc to cancel drawing and pan the map.
  • To resume selecting, click a selection tool.
Select by circle Select by circle

This is a tool that can be used to select multiple locations within a shape.

  • Drag a circle on the map to select multiple locations within the circle.
  • Press Ctrl and drag to add or remove multiple locations from the current selection.
  • When the Select by circle tool Select by rectangle is active, you cannot pan the map.
  • Press Esc to cancel drawing and pan the map.
  • To resume selecting, click a selection tool.
Select by polygon Select by polygon

This is a tool that can be used to select multiple locations within a shape.

  • Click to draw points on the map. Double-click to stop drawing and complete the polygon, selecting all features inside the area of the shape.
    Note:

    A minimum of three vertices are required to draw a polygon.

  • Optionally, press Ctrl while drawing to enable snapping.
  • Press Esc to cancel drawing.
  • To resume selecting, click a selection tool.
Select by freehand polygon Select by freehand polygon

This is a tool that can be used to select multiple locations within a shape.

  • Drag a shape on the map to select features within the shape.
  • Press Ctrl and drag to add or remove multiple features from the current selection.
  • Press Esc to cancel drawing and pan the map.
  • To resume selecting, click a selection tool.
Reference layer select Select using a reference layer

If you added a reference layer to the map, use this tool to select locations by clicking areas on the reference layer. Click an area on the reference layer in the map. Locations that are within a delimited area on a reference are highlighted; locations in other areas of the map are unavailable.

This tool appears only if the map contains one or more reference layers and a reference layer is currently active.

Drive-time select Select using a drive-time layer

If you added a buffer or drive-time area to your map, use the drive-time area selection tool to select data locations within the defined area.

This tool appears only if the map contains a search area layer and the search area layer is currently active.

Clear selection Clear selection

This tool clears all selections.

All selection tools are available in both Author mode (designers) and Reading view (consumers).

You can select a maximum of 250 locations at one time. While the Buffer/Drive Time pane is active, map selection tools are temporarily unavailable.

To select locations on the map and trigger interactions between the map and other visualizations, do the following:

  1. Open an ArcGIS for Power BI map-enabled report or dashboard and click the map to activate it.
  2. If necessary, click the Map tools button Map tools to display the tools.
  3. From the map tools, click the Selection tools button Expand selection tools.

    The selection tools pane appears.

  4. Choose a layer from the Active layer drop-down menu.

    Depending on the type of layer you choose, different selection tools are available.

  5. To make a selection on the map, do one of the following:
    • To select a single location, click the location on the map. The Select a single location tool Select a single location on the map is active by default. To add more locations to the selection, press the Ctrl key while you click additional locations on the map.
    • To select multiple locations from an area on the map, click the Select by rectangle Select by rectangle, Select by circle Select by circle, Select by polygon Select by polygon, or Select by freehand polygon Select by freehand polygon tool. To add more locations to the selection, press the Ctrl key and draw additional shapes on the map. You can select a maximum of 250 locations at a time.
    • To select locations based on an area of a reference layer, make sure a reference layer is selected from the Active layer drop-down menu. Click the Reference layer select button Select using a reference layer and click an area on the reference layer.
    • To select locations within a specified buffer or driving time, make sure the search area layer is selected from the Active layer drop-down menu. Click the Drive-time select button Select using a drive-time layer and click a drive-time area on the map.

    Note:

    • If you chose the Heat map or Clustering theme for your map, selection tools and pop-ups are not available. Choose a different map theme and try again.
    • While the time slider on a time-enabled map is playing the animation, you cannot select locations on the map. When the animation is paused, you can select locations that are visible on the map. Click the Play/Pause, Previous, or Next button, or move the slider handles to view and select locations from a different time interval. Previously selected locations are cleared when the new time interval appears.

    Selected locations appear highlighted on the map. Unselected locations on the map are unavailable, and the contents of related visualizations update to reflect the information pertaining to the selected locations.

  6. To clear the entire selection, click the Clear selection tool Clear selection. You can also do any of the following to deselect locations:
    • To clear the entire selection, click an empty area of the basemap or a polygon that doesn't contain data locations.
    • To deselect multiple locations, make sure one of the multiple location selection tools is active. Press Ctrl and draw a shape on the map. Locations inside the shape are deselected.
