Print a map

Note:

Some workflows may require specific privileges. For more information about user types, roles, and privileges, see the Accounts topic.

Use the Export tool to export a printer-friendly page of a map in various formats. See Content sharing for general information about sharing ArcGIS content.

You can print the map layout or an image of a selected extent. Typically you can print a map layout or extent in AIX, EPS, GIF, JPEG, PDF, PNG8, PNG32, SVG, SVGZ, and TIFF formats, although print formats can change.

Caution:

When printing data added from SharePoint, the service may time out with an error. You can zoom in and print or use the Screenshot option.

Export a map layout

The map layout includes the current extent on the map, the document title, a scale bar, and the date.

To create a printer-friendly map layout, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the map and navigate to the extent you want to export.
  2. From the map tools, click Share | Export Share | Export.
  3. Click the Export tab Export.
  4. From the File format drop-down menu, choose the file type to export.
  5. Choose the DPI value for the printout.

DPI refers to the number of printed dots contained in one inch of a printed image. You can increase or decrease the DPI value using the up and down arrows. The current limit for a map layout is 960.

    Note:

See Configure the organization to print maps in the ArcGIS Enterprise help for additional information.

  6. Turn on the Include layout toggle button to include layout information:
    • Click Page Setup and choose the page size for the map print.
      Note:

When you sign in with ArcGIS Enterprise, custom print templates are available in the Print pane.

    • Provide a name in the Author field.
    • Provide information in the Copyright text box if applicable.
    • Check the Include legend check box to print a legend on the map printout.

Alternatively, turn off the Include layout toggle button to exclude these options.

  7. Click Export to create the map file.

A progress wheel appears. Exported files open in a new tab in a printer-friendly format.

  8. Save or print the file.

    Caution:
Ensure you are done saving or printing the file before closing the browser tab.

Export the map extent

You can print a selected map extent rather than an entire map layout.

To create a printer-friendly document of a selected map extent, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the map and navigate to the extent you want to export.
  2. From the map tools, click Share | Export Share | Export.
  3. Click the Export tab Export.
  4. From the File format drop-down menu, choose either Screenshot JPG or Screenshot PNG.
  5. Choose the DPI value for the printout.

DPI refers to the number of printed dots contained in one inch of a printed image. You can increase or decrease the DPI value using the up and down arrows. The current limit for an image is 480.

  6. Click Export to create the map file.

    Your computer's file browser appears.

  7. Enter a file name and select a location to save the image in your computer's file browser and click Save.

The file is saved to your computer.
