Choose a basemap

Note:

You need the following account and license types to use this workflow:

  • Microsoft license—You need a Microsoft 365 license, role Contributor or higher, to use this workflow.
  • ArcGIS account type—Standard users have access to four standard basemaps. You must sign in to your ArcGIS account to access your organization’s basemaps.

A basemap provides a background, or visual context, for the data in a map. You can choose a basemap for a map.

See Basemap layer and Layers to learn more about managing layers in a map.

To choose a basemap, complete the following steps:

  1. Edit the map-enabled SharePoint page and activate edit mode for the web part.

Although you can change the basemap in run mode, the change is not saved with the map. To save changes, the web part must be in edit mode.

  2. From the map tools, click Basemap Basemap.

The Basemap gallery appears, showing thumbnails of available basemaps.

    Note:

Four standard basemaps are available to Standard users. If you are signed in to an ArcGIS account, the availability of organization basemaps is determined by your ArcGIS administrator.

  3. Click a basemap to select it.

The map automatically updates to the new basemap.

  4. Click Close Close to close the Basemap gallery and view the map.
