Set rotation by attribute

Note:

You need the following account and license types to use this workflow:

  • Microsoft license—You need a Microsoft 365 license, with the Contributor role or higher, to set symbol rotation.
  • ArcGIS account type—Standard users can perform the functions of this workflow; you do not need to sign in.

You can rotate symbols by an angle, determined by a specified field, when you want the symbol to reflect direction—for example, the direction the wind is blowing or a vehicle is traveling—or imply movement on a map.

Note:

This workflow is not available for ArcGIS for Power BI symbols.

See Data styles to learn about data style options and Smart map styles to learn about smart map cards.

When determining a symbol style, choose one that points north so that the rotation matches the resulting direction of the symbol.

Tip:

The default symbol is round, which doesn't depict rotation well. It is best to choose a different shape when setting rotation.

To rotate symbols, complete the following steps:

  1. Follow the steps in the Apply a style workflow for your component:
  2. Choose a smart map card.
  3. Hover over the style card and click Style options Style options to customize the look of the layer.

    The style options appear.

  4. Expand Rotate symbols and turn on the Use rotation toggle button.
  5. Specify the attribute value for the rotation and the type of rotation:
    1. From the Field drop-down menu, choose an attribute value to represent the rotation.
    2. Choose the type of rotation.

      OptionDescription

      Geographic

Angles are measured clockwise from the 12:00 position (geographic rotation).

      Arithmetic

Angles are measured counterclockwise from the 3:00 position (arithmetic rotation).

      Note:

With arithmetic rotation, the symbol—assumed to be pointing north—is first rotated 90 degrees clockwise to align with 0 degrees before the counterclockwise rotation from the field attribute is applied.
