Measurement widget

The Measurement widget calculates distances, perimeters, and areas in web maps and web scenes. Experience Builder uses the ellipsoid-based geodesic calculation to calculate measurements. You can set default units of measure in the widget's settings and users can change the units at run time.

Examples

Use this widget to support app design requirements such as the following:

  • You want users to estimate horizontal distances.
  • Your app includes a 3D rendering of a proposed residential development and you want viewers to understand distances and areas.
  • You want users to quickly draw outlines over parcels to estimate their areas and perimeters.

Usage notes

This widget requires connection to a Map widget. To calculate vertical distances, the Map widget must be connected to a 3D data source, either a global or local web scene.

When you include this widget in an app, a panel or toolbar provides users with the following measurement tools:

  • Distance Distance—Measure a linear distance. Click the map where you want to start the measurement, and click once for every vertex of the line you want to measure. Double-click to complete the line.
    • For 3D scenes, this tool calculates Direct, Horizontal, and Vertical distances. Measuring distance in a 3D scene creates a right triangle where direct distance is the hypotenuse and horizontal and vertical distance are the legs.
  • Area Area—Measure an area and its perimeter. Click the map where you want to start the measurement, and click once for every vertex of the area you want to measure. Double-click to complete the area.

Optionally, users can do any of the following:

  • Click the Unit drop-down menu and select a different unit of measure. Measurement results convert to the newly selected unit.
  • Click New measurement to start another measurement.
  • Click Clear measurement Clear measurement to clear the current measurement.

The Measurement widget uses snapping—the pointer snaps to features on the map. You can press and hold the Ctrl key to temporarily turn off snapping.

Settings

The Measurement widget includes the following settings:

  • Select a Map widget—Select a Map widget.
  • Tools—You can turn on the following measurement tools. You must turn on at least one tool for the widget to be useable.
    • Distance—Include the distance tool in the widget panel at run time.
    • Area—Include the area tool in the widget panel at run time.
For Default Unit, you must set a unit of measurement for each active tool. Users can change the units at run time.
  • Arrangement—Choose an arrangement style for the widget, either Classic or Toolbar.
