Select features

Selecting features on a map provides the ability to identify, locate, and visually analyze a set or subset of data on the map. For example, you can select records in a spreadsheet that correspond to the features selected on the map, or you can filter the spreadsheet to show only the selected features. You can export data from features selected on the map to a new worksheet in the current Excel file.

There are several selection tools to help you select features on the map.

Tip:

To adjust the map view while selecting features, click Pan Pan to deactivate the selection tool and pan the map. Then click the appropriate tool to resume feature selection.

Analyze selected features

You can access more detailed information about the selected features in several ways. Use selected features to interact with infographics cards.

Note:

You can view the selection results pane at any time by clicking the Select features button Select features in the layer options.

Work with the spreadsheet

View detailed information about the selected features by viewing the corresponding records in the Excel spreadsheet.

Select features pane with Filter sheet and Export buttons

In the Select features pane, click one of the following:

  • Filter sheet—Filters the spreadsheet to display only rows that correspond to features selected on the map. Filter sheet then changes to Clear Filters.
  • Clear filters—Clears filters so that all rows reappear in Excel, regardless of the features selected on the map.
  • Export—Exports information about the selected features to a new worksheet in the current workbook.

Export data

When exporting selected rows, they are exported in a new Excel worksheet in the current workbook. Exporting to an .xlsx file creates a new worksheet that includes data for each feature selected on the map. Polyline and polygon geometries are exported.

Note:

If you are exporting from an .xlsx file, the exported features are exported to an Excel table in a new worksheet of the current workbook.

If you are exporting from a .csv file, the exported features are exported to a nontabular format (any data that is not formatted in a table).

Considerations

Keep the following in mind when selecting features:

  • If the active layer is styled using clustering or a heat map, the selection tools are not enabled. Turn off clustering or choose a different style for the layer to enable the selection tools.
  • When you are working with a time-aware layer, the selection tools can only select features that are currently visible on the map. Features that appear earlier or later in the time animation must be added to the selection separately.
  • For point features, only features that are completely within the selection area are included in the selection.
