Print a map

Note:

You need the following account and license types to use this workflow:

  • Microsoft license—You need a Microsoft 365 license, with the Viewer role or higher, to print a map. Your administrator may need to explicitly grant your user type and role permission to use the print functions.
  • ArcGIS account type—You must sign in to an ArcGIS account to complete the steps in this workflow.

Use the Print tool to export a printer-friendly page of a map in various formats.

See Content sharing for general information about sharing ArcGIS content.

You can print the map layout or an image of a selected extent. Typically you can print a map layout or extent in AIX, EPS, GIF, JPEG, PDF, PNG8, PNG32, SVG, SVGZ, and TIFF formats, although print formats can change.

Caution:

When printing client-side features added from Excel, the service may time out with an error. You can zoom in and print or use the Screenshot option.

Print a map layout

The map layout includes the document title, a scale bar, and the date.

To create a printer-friendly map layout, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the map you want to print.
  2. From the map tools, click Print Print.
  3. Click the Map & Layout tab.
  4. Provide a title for the map document.
  5. From the File format drop-down menu, choose the file type to export.

For hosted feature layers, it is recommended that you zoom in to improve resolution when exporting.

  6. Choose the DPI value for the printout.

DPI refers to the number of printed dots contained in one inch of a printed image. You can increase or decrease the DPI value using the up and down arrows. The current limit for a map layout is 960.

    Note:

See Configure the organization to print maps in the ArcGIS Enterprise help for additional information.

  7. Turn on the Include layout toggle button to include page setup, author, copyright, include legend, and export image to Excel information in the printout.
    • Click Page Setup and choose the page size for the map print.
      Note:

When you sign in with ArcGIS Enterprise, custom print templates are available in the Print pane.

    • Provide a name in the Author field.
    • Provide information in the Copyright text box if applicable.
    • Check the Include legend check box to print a legend on the map printout.
    • Check the Export image to Excel check box.

Alternatively, turn the Include layout toggle button off to exclude these options.

  8. Click Export to create the map file.

Exported files are listed in the Print pane. You can click the file to open it in a new browser tab and print it using the browser's print option. Closing the Print pane does not remove the exported files. Exported files are removed when you close the map or refresh the browser.

Print a map extent

You can print a selected map extent rather than the entire map.

To create a printer-friendly document of a selected map extent, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the map to print.
  2. From the map tools, click Print Print.
  3. Click the Screenshot tab.
  4. Provide a title for the map document.
  5. From the File format drop-down menu, choose the file type to export.
  6. Choose the DPI value for the printout.

DPI refers to the number of printed dots contained in one inch of a printed image. You can increase or decrease the DPI value using the up and down arrows. The current limit for an image is 480.

  7. Check the Export image to Excel check box.
  8. Click Export to create the map file.

Exported files are listed in the Print pane. You can click the file to open it in a new browser tab and print it using the browser's print option. Closing the Print pane does not remove the exported files. Exported files are removed when you close the map or refresh the browser.
