ArcGIS Places - Canada

Esri provides two ArcGIS Places datasets for Canada sourced from data supplied by Data Axle and SafeGraph.

  • Business Locations—Sourced from data supplied by Data Axle. This dataset contains point-based locations of individual businesses, including attributes such as the company name, address, and business or industry category. It can be used to provide information about a location or a business, or about the regional distribution of businesses by category. See the Data Axle topic for a full list of available business attributes.
  • Points of interest—Sourced from data supplied by SafeGraph. This dataset contains approximately 1.1 million points of interest in Canada. Available attributes include the place-name, location, an industrial classification code, and brand (when applicable). See the SafeGraph topic for a full list of available point of interest attributes.

Sample questions and use cases

Information about business listings and points of interest can help companies understand consumer behavior and preferences and assist decision-making. The Canadian ArcGIS Places datasets are ideal for selecting individual businesses or a network of businesses that can be used for trade area analysis, store rankings, and mapping competitors.

Sample questions that can be answered using ArcGIS Places data may include the following:

  • Where are certain types of businesses located within my trade area?
  • What is the competitive risk around this location?
  • How many similar businesses are nearby?
  • How many quick-service restaurants are in my municipality? Can the NAICS code be used to categorize them?
  • Which, or how many, companies have more than 100 employees in my trade area?

Example use cases for ArcGIS Places include the following:

Evaluate the competitive landscape

Companies can use ArcGIS Places data to evaluate the competitive landscape around any existing or proposed store sites by mapping the locations of their competitors. This can help determine the retail opportunity for any location and estimate a new store’s sales volume.
