Use Recreation Outreach

The Recreation Outreach solution delivers a set of capabilities that help you understand recreation license trends, engage the public about their recreation experiences, and promote recreation opportunities to the public.

In this topic, you’ll learn how to use the solution by assuming the role of a user and performing the workflows below.

Explore outdoor destinations

Recreation Outreach contains multiple locator apps for the public to find recreation opportunities and license information. Members of the public can search for an address or click the corresponding map to find information about parks, trails, water resources, wildlife resources, or recreation license locations.

You are a member of the public and want to learn what recreation opportunities are in your area. You will use the locator apps in the Recreation Outreach solution to find outdoor destinations.

Find park opportunities

To find park opportunities, complete the following steps:

  1. Browse to the Outdoor Recreation site.
  2. Find the Park Locator card and click the Explore button to launch the Park Locator.
  3. Enter your address in the search box or pan and zoom to an area of the map you are interested in.
  4. Click the Filter button and select characteristics to limit results based on your selected criteria.
  5. Choose the location of interest from the list and review information provided.
  6. Click the Directions tab to view driving directions to the recreation opportunity from your defined location.

Find trail opportunities

To find trail opportunities, complete the following steps:

  1. Browse to the Outdoor Recreation site.
  2. Find the Trail Locator card and click the Explore button to launch the Trail Locator.
  3. Enter your address in the search box or pan and zoom to an area of the map you are interested in.
  4. Click the Filter button and select characteristics to limit results based on your selected criteria.
  5. Choose the location of interest from the list and review information provided.
  6. Click the Directions tab to view driving directions to the recreation opportunity from your defined location.

Find fishing and boating opportunities

To find fishing and boating opportunities, complete the following steps:

  1. Browse to the Outdoor Recreation site.
  2. Find the Water Resource Locator card and click the Explore button to launch the Water Resource Locator .
  3. Enter your address in the search box or pan and zoom to an area of the map you are interested in.
  4. Click the Filter button and select characteristics to limit results based on your selected criteria.
  5. Choose the location of interest from the list and review information provided.
  6. Click the Directions tab to view driving directions to the recreation opportunity from your defined location.

Find hunting opportunities

To find hunting opportunities, complete the following steps:

  1. Browse to the Outdoor Recreation site.
  2. Find the Wildlife Resource Locator card and click the Explore button to launch the Wildlife Resource Locator .
  3. Enter your address in the search box or pan and zoom to an area of the map you are interested in.
  4. Click the Filter button and select characteristics to limit results based on your selected criteria.
  5. Choose the location of interest from the list and review information provided.
  6. Click the Directions tab to view driving directions to the recreation opportunity from your defined location.

Develop recreation inventory

The Recreation Information Manager app can be used by operations staff to create and update recreation information shared with the public. Existing recreation assets collected in the field can be reviewed and information added to help internal staff and the public find information about recreation opportunities. New recreation assets can also be added to a recreation inventory using imagery and record documents.

You will assume the role of operations staff in a local government department. In this workflow, you are asked to review recreation assets and add new recreation assets. The steps below provide guidance; however, you can enter information as you see fit and examine the different dependencies in the form.

Review recreation assets

First, you will review recently created trails data using the Recreation Information Manager app.

  1. Sign in to your ArcGIS organization and browse to the Recreation Information Manager app.
  2. Open the item page and click View.
  3. In the asset list on the left, click Trails.
  4. On the right, click Filter, and for Reviewed is, click No.

    The map filters trails that need to be reviewed.

  5. Select a trail on the map or from the table.

    The Edit feature form appears.

  6. Type or select values for each attribute, and after you finish providing attribute values, click Update.

Add a new recreation asset

Next, you will create a trail using the Recreation Information Manager app.

  1. Verify that you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization and browse to the Recreation Information Manager app.
  2. In the asset list on the left, click Trails.
  3. Use the map to zoom and pan to an area of interest.
  4. In the Editor widget, click Settings > Snapping layers, and check the Trails snapping layer check box to enable snapping to this layer.
  5. Under Create features, click Trails.
  6. Hover over a trail in the map and follow the on-screen tips to complete your edits, snapping your trail features to the trails snapping layer.
    Note:

    When you need the line to curve or change directions, click the map in those locations to add a node. When you get to the end of the new line, double-click that location on the map to complete the drawing. Each time you add a feature to the map, the attributes for the feature appear in the Create features pane.

  7. Type or select values for each attribute, and after you finish providing attribute values, click Create.
    Tip:

    To deactivate editing, unselect the Trails template in the Editor widget.

  8. Repeat these steps to add more recreation layers.

Update closure information

Communicating the status of recreation opportunities helps visitors plan trips and reduces congestion and overuse of resources. The Recreation Information Manager app can be used by operations staff to create and update recreation information shared with the public.

You will assume the role of operations staff in a local government department. In this workflow, you are asked to create closure information that will be shared with the public.

  1. Verify that you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization and browse to the Recreation Information Manager app.
  2. In the upper right, click Closures.
  3. Use the map to zoom and pan to an area of interest.
  4. In the Editor widget, click Closures.
  5. Add a new closure to the map.
  6. Type or select values for each attribute, and when you finish providing attribute values, click Create.
    Tip:

    To deactivate editing, unselect the Closures template in the Editor widget.

Note:

When you create closures and update asset status information using the Recreation Information Manager app, the recreation locators deployed with the Recreation Outreach solution will automatically be updated with the new information.

Review and prepare recreation license data

Staff can use the Recreation License Management ArcGIS Pro project and Recreation License Management Dashboard to organize, load, and review recreation license data. This allows staff to review this information spatially, which can provide an enhanced view and understanding of license trends.

You will assume the role of a data analyst at a conservation agency responsible for analyzing trends in recreation license data. You are asked to use the Recreation License Management ArcGIS Pro project to prepare your data to share in the Recreation License Dashboard.

  1. Start ArcGIS Pro and open the Recreation License Management project.
  2. On the View tab, in the Windows group, click Catalog, and click Catalog Pane.
  3. In the Catalog pane, expand Tasks, and double-click the Recreation License Management task.
  4. In the Tasks pane, click the Getting Started task group to expand the collection of tasks.
  5. Click the Understanding Recreation License Management task to review the project.
  6. Follow the tasks provided in the Prepare License Data task group to format recreation license data.
  7. Follow the tasks provided in the Calculate License Information task group to summarize and load recreation license data.
