Use Protection Operations

The Protection Operations solution delivers a set of capabilities that help you track poaching and illegal activity, monitor protection operations, and visualize patterns of illegal activity.

In this topic, you’ll learn how to use the solution by assuming the role of a user and performing the workflows below.

Collect protection incidents

You will start by assuming the role of a field worker in a protected area collecting protection incidents. You are asked to use the Protection Incident Reporter survey to collect protection incidents.

  1. In a browser, open the Protection Incident Reporter.
  2. Click the Collect button.
  3. Fill in the following details:

  4. Click Submit and select Send now.

Manage protection incidents

Now you will assume the role of conservation staff member. You will review protection incidents.

  1. In a browser, go to the Protection Incident Manager app.
  2. In the Illegal Incident Type field, click the Filter icon and choose Poaching.
  3. Select a protection incident from the table.
  4. Click the Edit Record icon (pencil) in the lower left-hand panel.
  5. Click the Status dropdown and choose In Progress and click Save.

Monitor protection incidents

Now you will assume the role of a protected area manager. You will monitor the status of protection incidents in and around a protected area.

  1. In a browser, go to the Protection Incident Dashboard.
  2. In the filter panel:
  3. Select Evidence for the Incident Type filter.
  4. Select In Progress for the Status filter.
  5. Select one of the protections incidents from the incidents list.
  6. Click on the View Incident Details link to open a new browser tab and review the protection incident details.

Monitor protected area operations

Now you will assume the role of a protected area manager. You will monitor the status of poaching and illegal activity, wildlife observations, and wildlife conflicts in and around protected areas.

  1. In a browser, go to the Protected Area Dashboard.
  2. In the filter panel, select In progress for the Status filter.
  3. At the bottom of the page, click between the Protection Incidents, Wildlife Observations, and Wildlife Conflicts tabs to view information about each area.
  4. While in the Protection Incidents tab, select one of the protections incidents from the incidents list.
  5. Click on the View Incident Details link to open a new browser tab and review the protection incident details.

Generate Protected Area Reports

Now you will assume the role of a conservation staff member. You will perform analysis and generate reports on protected area data.

  1. In a browser, go to the Protected Area Reports app.
  2. Open the Filter Protected Area Data tool.
  3. Turn on the Poaching Incident Status filter and select In Progress.
  4. Open the Update Layer Visibility tool.
  5. Turn off the Wildlife Conflicts and Wildlife Observations layers.
  6. To perform analyses, open Perform Analysis. Select an analysis tool, set the analysis parameters, and click the Run Analysis button. Once the tool completes, the analysis output will display on the map.
  7. To create a hard copy of the map showing analysis outputs, use Print a Map.
  8. To generate a report, open Create Reports group. Choose which type of report to run, then define the area of interest for the report, select a buffer distance (optional), and click the Report button. An overview of the report information will be displayed. To download the report data, use the Download button. Click the Print button to generate physical copy of the report.
