Use Electric Underground Inspections

The Electric Underground Inspections solution delivers a set of capabilities that help you organize underground asset inspection campaigns, assess the condition of assets in the field, monitor the progress of inspection campaigns, and understand the current condition of electric underground assets.

In this topic, you’ll learn how to use the solution by assuming the role of a user and performing the workflows below.

Underground inspection campaign

Electric utilities use underground infrastructure to provide power to many customers. In order to improve system reliability, reduce operations, and maintenance costs of their system electric utilities perform inspections on their underground assets.

Create an inspection campaign

In this workflow, you will assume the role of an engineer who wants to create a campaign of assets that need to be inspected.

  1. Sign in to your ArcGIS organization and browse to the Underground Inspection Center web experience.
  2. Open the item page and click View.
  3. Click the Manage button in the app header to open the Manage page.

    The Smart Editor widget appears in the left panel by default, which allows you to create your inspection campaign.

  4. Click the Layer List widget and turn the Medium Voltage Transformer on.
  5. Open the Filter Assets widget and turn the Medium Voltage Transformer filter on to filter the map to only see underground transformers on the map.
  6. Click the Smart Editor widget to create new inspections.
  7. To create an unassigned underground inspection, click the Unassigned template and from the drop-down below select Copy by rectangle or Copy by polygon.
  8. Select the medium voltage transformers on the map that needs to be inspected.
  9. Click the Apply Field Matching button.
  10. In the Apply Field Matching dialog click the drop-down to the right of the AssetGUID field and set it to Global ID.
  11. Click Apply and then click Create Feature(s).
  12. On the Required Field dialog click the Asset Type drop-down and select Transformer.
  13. Click Save.

    You have now created an transformer inspection campaign.

Assign staff to inspections

In this workflow, you will assume the role of an engineer who wants to assign assets that need to be inspected.

  1. Verify you have the Underground Inspection Center web experience open.
  2. Click the Manage button in the app header to open the Manage page.
  3. Click the Assign Inspections widget and select the extent or polygon tool to select the newly created overhead inspection records to be assigned.
  4. On the map, drag a box around the inspection records that you would like to assign to field staff.
  5. In the Assign Inspections widget pop-up, set the drop-down for Inspection Status to Assigned and select an inspector from Inspection Assigned To drop-down.
  6. Click Save.

Perform an inspection

In this workflow, you will assume the role of a field worker who have been assigned underground assets to inspect in the field.

  1. Download the Survey123 field app onto your mobile device.
  2. Open Survey123 and sign in to your ArcGIS organization.
  3. At the upper right, tap your avatar and tap Download Surveys.
  4. Search for Assigned - Underground Inspections and tap the Download button.
  5. Tap the back arrow to return to the survey gallery.
  6. Tap Assigned - Underground Inspections and tap Inbox.
  7. Tap the Refresh button.
  8. Select an inspection from the list and click Edit.
  9. Fill out the inspection form.
    • Orange - Conveys that a question has not been answered.
    • Adequate/Inadequate - If any questions are set to Inadequate an additional question will appear.
  10. For Inspection Status, specify the appropriate status.
  11. Note:
    If any repair question for the exterior or interior section is not repaired on site set the status to Needs Repair. Otherwise the status should be set to completed.
  12. Type in any notes and add a picture.
  13. Tap the check mark at the lower right and tap Send now.

Assets in need of repairs

Maintaining underground asset infrastructure is costly and essential for power to run to customers. Ensuring assets are properly repaired is essential for reliable power to customers.

Identify and assign assets in need of repairs

In this workflow, you will assume the role of an engineer who wants to identify and assign assets to be repaired.

  1. Verify you have the Underground Inspection Center web experience open.
  2. Click the Manage button in the app header to open the Manage page.
  3. Open the Filter Inspections widget and select Needs Repair from the drop-down menu.
  4. Click Apply.
  5. On the Assign Inspections widget select the extent tool and then select the assignments on the map that need repairs.
  6. In the Assign Inspections popup set the Inspection Status to Repair Assigned and set the Repair Assigned To the appropriate repair person.
  7. Click Save.

Conduct repairs

In this workflow, you will assume the role of a repair person who wants to conduct a repair on an asset in the field.

  1. Open Survey123 and sign in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. At the upper right, tap your avatar and tap Download Surveys.
  3. Search for Needs Repair - Underground Inspections and tap the Download button.
  4. Tap the back arrow to return to the survey gallery.
  5. Tap Needs Repair - Underground Inspections and tap Inbox.
  6. Tap the Refresh button.
  7. Select an asset that needs to be repaired from the list and click Edit.
  8. In the app, complete repair questions notes and take photos with markups as needed.
  9. Update the Inspection Status parameter using the drop-down menu.
  10. Tap the check mark at the lower right and tap Send now.

Monitor inspections

Monitoring the progress of inspection campaigns allows staff to evaluate the best use of resources for their system in order to provide the most reliability to their customers.

In this workflow, you will assume the role of an engineer who wants to evaluate the current progress of the underground asset inspection campaign.

  1. Sign in to your ArcGIS organization and browse to the Underground Inspection Center web experience.
  2. Open the item page and click View.
  3. Click the Monitor button to open the Monitor page.
  4. On the Overview tab, review the total counts for each inspection status.
  5. On the General Information tab, review the high-level metrics for inspections and repairs.
  6. Use the asset list in the left panel to explore inspection details in the right panel that include inspection and assignment details.
  7. On the Condition Information tab, review the high-level metrics for the inadequate exterior and interior conditions.

Post administrative tasks

Once the inspection campaign is completed, engineering staff can archive and delete the inspection records. Learn how to manually run the post administrative tasks or schedule the archival process.

Note:

You must be assigned a role of Administrator or custom role which includes the privilege to Create and edit notebooks in order to run an ArcGIS Notebooks and complete the following steps.

Manually run the archive and delete notebooks

In this workflow, you will assume the role of an engineer who wants to manually archive and delete a campaign to prepare for the next inspection campaign.

  1. Verify you have the Underground Inspection Center web experience open.
  2. Click the Administer button to open the Administer page.
  3. Click Archive Underground Inspections Notebook.
    Note:

    To schedule the Archive Underground Inspections notebook, follow the steps in the Scheduling the archive notebook section.

  4. Click Cell and select Run All from the drop-down list.
  5. Click the Load Services button and once loaded, click the Copy Records button.
  6. On the Administer page of the Underground Inspection Center web experience, click Delete Underground Inspections Notebook.
    Note:

    Only run this notebook after the campaign has been fully completed in preparation for the next campaign.

  7. Click Cell and then choose Run All from the drop-down list.
  8. Click the Load Services button and click the Delete Rows button.

Schedule the archive notebook

In this workflow, you will assume the role of an engineer who wants to schedule the archive notebook and review the notebook log.

  1. Sign in to your ArcGIS organization and open the Archive Underground Inspections notebook.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the Notebook and remove the # symbol to uncomment the last two lines of code.

    This will allow the notebook to be automatically run with not user input required.

  3. Click Save.
  4. To schedule this notebook, follow the Create a task steps.
  5. After the notebook automatically runs, open the Notebook Log table.
  6. Click the Data tab and review the table for log information for the results of the scheduled notebook.
