Use Backflow Inspections

The Backflow Inspections solution delivers a set of capabilities that helps organizations requiring backflow inspections, such as water utilities and municipalities, to create an inventory of backflow prevention devices, conduct backflow inspections, and ensure the entire organization has access to inspection information.

Perform backflow inspections

Many jurisdictions require the installation of backflow prevention devices at cross connections as well as routine inspection and testing to ensure proper function. Digitally recording backflow prevention devices inspections in the field and making data available across the organization means all staff have access to current information and can ensure backflow prevention devices are inspected at the appropriate time and any necessary repair or maintenance are carried out.

Perform inspections in the field

In this workflow, you will assume the role of mobile worker who is responsible for inspecting backflow prevention devices.

  1. Open ArcGIS Field Maps and ArcGIS Survey123 and sign in to your ArcGIS organization on your mobile device.

    If changes are made to the inspection form, you will need to download the updates. You will be prompted to do so. Update the form prior to beginning backflow inspections.

  2. Tap the Backflow Inspections Field Map to open it.
  3. Tap on the backflow prevention device you are going to inspect.
  4. Click on Add Inspection at the top of the popup.
  5. Once ArcGIS Survey123 opens an inspection form will be displayed.
  6. Perform the inspection and fill out the inspection form.
  7. Click on the check mark at the bottom of the page to Submit the inspection.
  8. Click on Send now.
  9. Repeat steps 3 through 8 to add additional inspections.

Add backflow inspections in the office

Use the Backflow Inspections Editor to review backflow inspections submitted from the field and to create inspections from details provided to you

In this workflow you will assume the role of an office worker who is responsible for entering in historical backflow inspections or inspection details provided to you.

  1. Verify that you are signed into your ArcGIS organization and browse to the Backflow Inspections Editor app.
  2. From the item page, click View Application.
  3. On the map, search for and select a backflow prevention device to view the popup.
  4. Click Add Inspection.
  5. The backflow inspection form will open in a new window.
  6. Fill out the details of the inspection and click Submit to save the results.
  7. Navigate back to the Backflow Inspections Editor and repeat steps 3 through 5 to add additional inspections.

Manage operations

Routine inspection and testing can identify improperly functioning backflow prevention devices so appropriate action can be taken to safeguard community health.

Monitor operations

To ensure system reliability and effective operation, backflow prevention devices must be inspected on a routine basis.

Use the Backflow Inspections Overview to monitor inspections.

In this workflow, you will assume the role of an operations manager who wants to keep track of the progress of the backflow inspection program.

  1. Browse to the Backflow Inspections - Office Users group and locate the Backflow Inspections Overview to open the dashboard.
  2. Use the map to explore backflow inspection devices and view the progress of the inspection program.
  3. Click the Layer List widget to review the symbology of the inspection layers.
    • Backflow Last Inspection - the join view layer that displays the result of the most recent inspection (pass or fail) as well as if it is time for a new inspection based on your inspection program's requirements.

View operations

Making data available across the organization means all staff have access to current information and can ensure backflow prevention devices are inspected at the appropriate time and any necessary repair or maintenance are carried out.

Use the Backflow Inspections Viewer app to view inspection details.

In this workflow, you will assume the role of office staff who wants to stay informed of backflow inspections.

  1. Browse to the Backflow Inspections - Office Users group and locate the Backflow Inspections Viewer to open the app.
  2. Use the map to explore backflow inspection devices and view the progress of the inspection program.
  3. Click an inspected backflow device to view the details of the most recent inspection.
