The Military Ground Mobility solution delivers a set of capabilities that help Defense organizations compile terrain data for an area of responsibility, analyze the trafficability of terrain, and conduct cross county mobility analysis in support of operational planning.
In this topic, you will learn how to use the solution by assuming the role of a user and performing the following workflows.

Use your organization's data or the provided sample data to complete the tasks included in this solution's ArcGIS Pro project.Get started
First, you will download and unzip the Military Ground Mobility ArcGIS Pro project.
- Sign in to your ArcGIS organization and browse to the Military Ground Mobility Project item.
- From the item page, click Download.
- Unzip the downloaded folder, and then from the unzipped folder, open the ArcGIS Pro project.
- On the View tab, in the Window group, click Catalog Pane.
- In the Catalog pane, expand the Tasks folder.
Note:
If you do not see the Catalog pane, from the View tab, in the Windows group, click Catalog Pane.
- Expand the Tasks folder and then double-click the Military Ground Mobility task group.
- In the Tasks pane, expand the Explore Military Ground Mobility task group to see the collection of tasks.
Tip:
Click a group heading or task name to view its description at the bottom of the Tasks pane. - Double-click Overview to review the project.
- Double-click What's Included to review the data, tools, and files included with the project.
Set Up Military Ground Mobility project
Before starting analysis, the Military Ground Mobility Project must be configured to reflect your operational environment, the terrain data available, and the capabilities of your organization. The Set Up Military Ground Mobility project task group will guide you through this configuration.
This task group includes the following tasks:
- Establish Operational Environment
- Identify Spatial Reference
- Identify and Add Source Data
- Review Capabilities and Costs Tables
Create Cross Country Mobility Overlays
The first step in cross country mobility analysis is to create the Cross Country Mobility Overlays. In the Create Cross Country Mobility Overlays task group, you will create combined cost, vehicle speed, and vehicle time rasters for your area of responsibility. These rasters will reflect the input terrain data and vehicle capabilities identified in the previous task group. The raster overlays serve as the foundational data for cross country mobility analysis and will be used in follow-on task groups.
This task group includes the following tasks:
- Process Cross Country Mobility Overlays
- Optional: Create Terrain Classification Overlay
Optional: Update Cross Country Mobility Overlays
Intelligence or planning operations may identify new features that were not known when creating the initial cross country mobility overlays. These new features could include obstacles, obstructions, or tactical bridges. The Optional: Update Cross Country Mobility Overlays task group will guide you through steps to update the cross country mobility overlays to reflect the most recent intelligence and plans.
This task group includes the following task:
- Update Overlays
Optional: Conduct Travel Potential Analysis
Travel potential analysis can be used to determine how far an asset, either friendly or enemy, may travel from a starting location in a set amount of time given specific terrain conditions. The Optional: Conduct Travel Potential Analysis task group will guide you through this workflow.
This task group includes the following tasks:
- Create Starting Location
- Determine Travel Potential
Optional: Conduct Avenues of Approach Analysis
Avenues of Approach are paths used by a force leading to an objective or key location. The Optional: Conduct Avenues of Approach Analysis task group will walk you through creating rasters that can serve as guides when determining doctrinal Avenues of Approach.
This task group includes the following tasks:
- Create Origin and Destination Locations
- Create Avenues of Approach
- Process Avenues of Approach Speed Overlay
- Process Avenues of Approach Time Overlay
Optional: Conduct Routing Analysis
Using the cross country mobility overlays, cross country route options from an origin to a destination can be identified. The Optional: Conduct Routing Analysis task group will guide you through creating route options that reflect doctrinal corridor widths, determining route speed and route time, and identifying potential choke points along those routes.

- Process Route Speed Overlay

Optional: Share Analysis and Products
After cross country mobility analysis is complete, the output layers can be published and shared as web layers for others in your organization to use. These published web layers can be used in web maps and applications. The Optional: Share Analysis and Products task group will guide you through the steps to share your data with your organization.
