The Protection Operations solution delivers a set of capabilities that help you track poaching and illegal activity, monitor protection operations, and visualize patterns of illegal activity.
In this topic, you’ll learn how to use the solution by assuming the role of a user and performing the workflows below.

Use your organization's data or configured apps to follow these workflows.Collect protection incidents
You will start by assuming the role of a mobile worker in a protected area collecting protection incidents. You are asked to use the Protection Incident Reporter survey to collect protection incidents.
- On a mobile device, in ArcGIS Survey123, open the Protection Incident Reporter form.
- Tap the Collect button.
- Complete the survey with as much information as possible.
- Tap the check mark to submit the form, and then tap Send now.
Manage protection incidents
Next, you will assume the role of a conservation staff member. You will review protection incidents.
- In a browser, sign in to your ArcGIS organization, and then browse to the Protection Operations solution.
- View the Protection Incident Manager app.
- In the table, use the Illegal Incident Type column header filter to filter for a specific incident type.
- Select a protection incident from the table.
The report details open at the lower left.
- In the report details, click the Edit record button .
- Make any necessary updates to the report, and then click Save.
Monitor protection incidents
Now, you will assume the role of a protected area manager. You will monitor the status of protection incidents in and around a protected area.
- In a browser, sign in to your ArcGIS organization, and then browse to the Protection Operations solution.
- View the Protection Incident Dashboard app.
- On the left, adjust the filters to refine the results.
- On the right, select a protection incident from the incidents list.
The map zooms to the incident, and a pop-up with incident information appears.
- In the pop-up, click View Incident Details to open a new browser tab and review the protection incident details.
Monitor protected area operations
For this workflow, you will continue to assume the role of a protected area manager. You will monitor the status of poaching and illegal activity, wildlife observations, and wildlife conflicts in and around protected areas.
- In a browser, sign in to your ArcGIS organization, and then browse to the Protection Operations solution.
- View the Protected Area Dashboard app.
- In the left, adjust the filters to refine the results.
Tip:
If you do not see the filter panel, click the arrow on the left to expand the panel.
- At the bottom of the page, click the Protection Incidents, Wildlife Observations, and Wildlife Conflicts tabs to view information about each area.
- On the Protection Incidents tab, on the right, select a protection incident from the incidents list.
The map zooms to the incident, and a pop-up with incident information appears.
- In the pop-up, click View Incident Details to open a new browser tab and review the protection incident details.
Generate protected area reports
Finally, you will assume the role of a conservation staff member. You will perform analysis and generate reports on protected area data.
- In a browser, sign in to your ArcGIS organization, and then browse to the Protection Operations solution.
- View the Protected Area Reports app.
- Click the Filter Protected Area Data button to open the widget.
- In the widget, turn on the Poaching Incident Status filter, expand the section, and select a status type.
- Click the Update Layer Visibility button to open the widget.
- In the widget, select the layers that you want to include in your report.
- Click the Perform Analysis button to open the widget.
- Select an analysis tool, set the analysis parameters, and click Run Analysis.
After the tool completes, the analysis output displays on the map.
- To create a hard copy of the map showing analysis outputs, click the Print a Map button.
- To generate a report, click the Create Reports button to open the widget.
- To create a report, complete the following steps:
- Choose the report type.
- Define the area of interest.
- Optionally, set a buffer distance.
- Click Report.
An overview of the report information is displayed.
- Click the Download button to download the report data.
- Click the Print button to print a copy of the report.
