Use Fire Service Maps

The Fire Service Maps solution delivers a set of capabilities that help you produce station wall maps and run books for each fire response district and combine them in single map book when necessary. Fire Station Wall Maps can be produced for individual fire stations or combined into a single station wall map. Run books can also be produced for individual fire stations or combined into a single run book for the entire fire department.

In this topic, you’ll learn how to use the Fire Service Maps solution by assuming the role of the user and performing these workflows.

Understand Fire Service Maps

While maps have made their way on to public safety mobile data computers (MDC), two primary hardcopy maps are still produced for reference in the fire service. Station wall maps are generally small scale maps hung on the wall of each fire station to help new personnel become more familiar with the service area. Run Books, on the other hand, are large scale maps that include a series of map pages along with a street index. They are combined in to a single map book and are placed in each apparatus to supplement maps provided on the MDC.

To learn more about the elements contained in each fire service map, follow these steps:

1. Sign in to your ArcGIS organization and browse to the Fire Service Maps Desktop Application Template.
2. Open the item page and click Download.
3. Unzip and open the Fire Service Maps ArcGIS Pro project.
4. On the View tab, in the Windows group, click Catalog, and click Catalog Pane.
5. In the Catalog pane, expand the Tasks folder, and double-click the Fire Service Maps task item.
6. In the Task Pane, click the Getting to know Fire Service Maps task group to expand the collection of tasks.
7. Click on the Understand Fire Service Maps task and follow the steps provided.

Install ReportLab

ReportLab is a third-party Python library that can be used to create a street index in PDF format. The street index makes it easy to look up an address or street name and find the correct map page in a Fire Run Book. To install ReportLab, follow these steps:

1. Open the Fire Service Maps ArcGIS Pro project.
2. On the View tab, in the Windows group, click Catalog, and click Catalog Pane.
3. In the Catalog pane, expand the Tasks folder, and double-click the Fire Service Maps task item.
4. In the Task Pane, click the Getting to know Fire Service Maps task group to expand the collection of tasks.
5. Click on the Install Report Lab task and follow the steps provided.

Create fire run book

Fire Run Books include a cover page, several map pages, and a street index for each fire response district. They can be printed, placed in each apparatus, and used en-route to a call.

You will assume the role of a fire fighter responsible for producing a fire run book for your response district or fire department. The Fire Service Maps ArcGIS Pro project includes a series of tasks to help guide you through this workflow.

1. Open the Fire Service Maps ArcGIS Pro project.
2. On the View tab, in the Windows group, click Catalog, and click Catalog Pane.
3. In the Catalog pane, expand the Tasks folder, and double-click the Fire Service Maps task item.
4. In the Task Pane, click the Create fire run book task group to expand the collection of tasks.
5. Click on the Create cover page task. Follow the steps provided in this task and all subsequent ones.

Create station wall map

Station Wall Map are large-format wall maps that can be printed for each fire response area and hung near an engine or apparatus. The printed wall maps are used by fire personnel for route navigation before leaving the station.

You will assume the role of a fire fighter responsible for producing a station wall map for your response district. The Fire Service Maps ArcGIS Pro project includes a series of tasks to help guide you through this workflow.

1. Open the Fire Service Maps ArcGIS Pro project.
2. On the View tab, in the Windows group, click Catalog, and click Catalog Pane.
3. In the Catalog pane, expand the Tasks folder, and double-click the Fire Service Maps task item.
4. In the Task Pane, click the Create station wall map task group to expand the collection of tasks.
5. Click on the Create station wall map task. Follow the steps provided in this task and all subsequent ones.
