Use Stormwater Data Management

The Stormwater Data Management solution can be used by staff to collect and manage stormwater system information. This solution allows a stormwater utility to obtain information about the current state of their system. These workflows are intended for editors, field technicians, and managers who want to use the maps and apps to manage their utility data. You will learn how to use the Stormwater Data Management solution to add new assets from the field, manage stormwater data in the web and desktop, and view and interact with a dashboard to find key statistics about your system.

Add data in the field

In these workflows, you will be taking the role of a field technician collecting data in the field. If you have a mobile-centric workforce, this may be the best option to collect new data or validate existing data.

Collect manholes and pipes

As a field technician, you can add manholes and gravity pipes using ArcGIS Field Maps in the field.

  1. Open the ArcGIS Field Maps app and sign in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. Open the Stormwater Asset Collector map.
  3. Browse to the collection location.
  4. Tap Add Add.
  5. From the list of features, search for Manhole by swiping up or typing manhole in the filter search bar.
    If the manhole is added to an inaccurate location, or you want to move the point manually, move the cross hairs to the correct location by panning the map and tapping Update Point. This moves the added manhole to the specified location.
  6. Fill in any attributes and tap Submit.
    Note:
    Move to a safe location to fill in the attributes. The added manhole remains in its original location.
  7. Ensure the last collected manhole is selected and browse to the next manhole's location. Tap the Copy button at the bottom of the screen to create a copy of the previously added manhole at the location of the new manhole.
  8. Adjust any attributes as needed. Next, add the pipes to connect the manholes.
  9. Tap Add Add.
  10. Search for Gravity by swiping up or typing gravity in the filter search bar.
  11. Pan the map until the crosshairs snap to the manhole. An orange point appears when it is within a tolerance to snap.

  12. Tap the Add Point button to snap Gravity to the manhole.
  13. Pan to the second manhole and tap the Add Point button.
  14. Update the attributes and tap Submit to complete the sketch.

Collect a catch basin

As a field technician, you can collect catch basins of type sediment trap using ArcGIS Field Maps in the field.

  1. Open the ArcGIS Field Maps app and sign in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. Open the Stormwater Asset Collector map.
  3. Browse to the collection location.
  4. Tap Add Add.
  5. From the list of features, search for Sediment Trap under Catch Basin by swiping up to view all the options or typing Sediment Trap in the filter search bar, and selecting Sediment Trap.
  6. If the sediment trap is added to an inaccurate location, or you want to move the point manually, move the crosshairs to the correct location by panning the map and tapping Update Point. The added sediment trap moves to the specified location.
  7. Fill in any attributes and tap Submit.
  8. If you want to continue to collect the same type of catch basin, ensure the last collected sediment trap is selected and browse to the next sediment trap location. Tap the Copy button at the bottom of the screen to copy the previously added point to the location of the new sediment trap.
  9. Adjust the attributes and tap Submit.

Collect an outfall

As a field technician, you can collect an outfall location in the field using ArcGIS Field Maps.

  1. Open the ArcGIS Field Maps app and sign in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. Open the Stormwater Asset Collector map.
  3. Browse to the collection location.
  4. Tap Add Add.
  5. From the list of features, search for Pipe Outlet under Outlet by swiping up to view all the options or by typing Pipe Outlet in the filter search bar.
  6. If the pipe outlet is added to an inaccurate location, or you want to move the point manually, move the crosshairs to the correct location by panning the map and tapping Update Point. The added pipe outlet moves to the specified location.
  7. Swipe up to expand the attributes and make sure to set the field Outfall to Yes to designate this outlet as an outfall. Populate the Outfall ID field and any other attributes and tap Submit.

    When an outlet is designated as an outfall, the symbology will change to include an orange halo around the point and the label will update to use the Outfall ID field instead of the Asset ID. These updates are made using ArcGIS Arcade.

  8. If you want to continue to collect the same type of outfall, ensure the last collected outfall is selected and browse to the next location. Tap the Copy button at the bottom of the screen to copy the previously added point to the location of the new outfall.
  9. Adjust the attributes and tap Submit.

Collect a BMP boundary

As a field technician, you can collect BMP Boundary by collecting points and adjusting the boundary using ArcGIS Field Maps in the field.

  1. Open the ArcGIS Field Maps app and verify you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. Open the Stormwater Asset Collector map.
  3. Browse to the collection location.
  4. Tap Add Add.
  5. From the list of features, search for BMP Boundary by swiping up or typing in the search bar.

    A point is added to your location.

  6. If the starting point is added to an inaccurate location, or you want to move the point manually, move the crosshairs to the correct location by panning the map and tapping Update Point. The added starting point moves to the specified location.
  7. Collect or add the necessary points by tapping Add Point to outline the boundary.

  8. Fill in any attributes and tap Submit.

Collect BMP boundary by streaming

As a field technician, you can collect boundaries by collecting points and adjusting the boundary using ArcGIS Field Maps in the field.

  1. Open the ArcGIS Field Maps app and sign in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. Open the Stormwater Asset Collector map.
  3. Browse to the collection location.
  4. Tap Add Add.
  5. From the list of features, search for BMP Boundary by swiping up or typing in the search bar.

    A point is added to your location.

  6. Once the starting point is in the correct location, tap the options button and select Start Streaming.
  7. Walk the perimeter of the boundary until you get to a desired ending location.
  8. Tap Stop Streaming.
  9. Fill in any attributes and tap Submit.

Add map notes

As a field technician, you can add a map note to the system.

  1. Open the ArcGIS Field Maps app and sign in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. Open the Stormwater Asset Collector map.
  3. Browse to the map note location.
  4. Tap Add.
  5. From the list of features, search for the Map Notes type by swiping or typing a description in the filter search bar, select the Map Notes type, and add the note to the map by sketching a polygon in the map note location.
  6. Fill in the attributes and click Submit.

    The map note is added to the map and is available to be viewed and reviewed by others in the organization.

Add data in the web

In the workflows below, you will be taking the role of an editor adding data in ArcGIS Online. The workflows explain how to add data in the web, use the provided dashboard, and add and manage map notes.

Add pipes to connect features

As an editor, you want to use a web app to connect features with pipes.

  1. In a browser, sign in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. At the top of the site, click Groups.
  3. Browse to the Stormwater Editors group and locate the Stormwater Editor app. Click View Application to launch the app.

    In the Stormwater Editor app, the Asset Editor widget is open by default on the left side of the window when the app opens.

  4. In the Asset Editor pane, click the template drop-down menu and select Pipe, and choose Gravity from the list of options.
  5. Scroll down and fill in the preset values.
  6. With Gravity selected, press Ctrl to snap to a manhole by hovering over the point and clicking to start drawing.

  7. Draw a line from the first manhole to the next, press Ctrl to snap, and double-click to finish the sketch.

    You are prompted to update attributes and save.

  8. Click Save.
  9. Continue adding pipes between the manholes.

    The template and preset attributes remain selected so you can continue adding pipes.

Add an outfall and gravity pipe

As an editor, you want to use a web app to add a new outfall and gravity pipe.

  1. Verify you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. At the top of the site, click Groups.
  3. Browse to the Stormwater Editors group and locate the Stormwater Editor app. Click View Application to launch the app.

    In the Stormwater Editor app, the Asset Editor widget is open by default on the left side of the window when the app opens.

  4. In the Asset Editor pane, click the template drop-down menu and select Outlet, and choose Pipe Outlet from the list of options.
  5. Scroll down and fill in the preset values.
  6. With Pipe Outlet selected, click to add it to the map.
  7. In the attributes panel, set the Outfall field to Yes to designate this outlet as an outfall. Populate the Outfall ID field and any other attributes and click Save.

    When an outlet is designated as an outfall, the symbology will update to include an orange halo around the point and the label will update to use the Outfall ID field instead of the Asset ID field. These updates are made using ArcGIS Arcade.
  8. In the Asset Editor pane, click the template drop-down menu and select Pipe, and choose Gravity from the list of options.
  9. With Gravity selected, press Ctrl to snap to a the outfall by hovering over the point and clicking to start drawing.
  10. Draw a line from the outfall to the drop inlet, press Ctrl to snap, and double-click to finish the sketch.
  11. Click Save.
  12. Continue adding outfalls and gravity pipes by repeating steps 4-11.

Add a BMP Boundary

As a user, you can add a BMP Boundary to a system.

  1. Verify you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. At the top of the site, click Groups.
  3. Browse to the Stormwater Editors group and locate the Stormwater Editor app.

    In the Stormwater Editor app, the Asset Editor widget is open by default on the left side of the window when the app opens.

  4. In the Asset Editor pane, click the template drop-down menu and select BMP Boundary from the list, and select BMP Boundary.
  5. Scroll down and fill in the preset values if applicable.
  6. Sketch a polygon in the desired boundary location.

  7. Enter the remaining attributes and click Save.

Add map notes

As a user, you can add a map note to the system.

  1. Verify you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. At the top of the site, click Groups.
  3. Browse to the Stormwater Office Users group and locate the Stormwater Viewer app. Click View Application to launch the app.

    1. In the Stormwater Viewer, click the Map Notes Editor widget to open.
    2. Choose a map note issue type and sketch a polygon in the desired location.
    3. Enter attributes and click Save.

Manage map notes

As a GIS manager, you can review and resolve map notes about your system to ensure issues are being addressed.

  1. Verify you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. At the top of the site, click Groups.
  3. Browse to the Stormwater Map Notes Managers group and locate the Stormwater Map Notes Manager app. Click View Application to launch the app.

    In the upper right of the app, there are a number of widgets that have been configured to filter, edit, update, and manage map notes.

  4. Review the list of included widgets to learn how to use them to manage map notes:
    • Legend—View a list of included layers in the map. The legend displays what is visible on the map, so zooming in or out can expand or reduce the list if scale suppression is set on the layers.
    • Filter—Use the Creation Date, Issue, and Severity filters to view only map notes that fit the entered criteria. Select a date range or an option from the drop-drown menu and turn on a filter to view the selection on the map.
    • Batch Edit Map Notes—Select a group of map notes using one of the selection tools and update values for all the selected features at once.
    • Map Notes Editor—Add a new map note or edit an existing map note.
    • Map Notes Summary—View all the map notes by status and expand each section to view the individual notes. Click a note to zoom to it on the map and view its attributes in a pop-up.

    These changes are reflected in other apps and maps across the system so others in your organization can view the latest information.

Use the stormwater dashboard

As a member of the utility, you want to have a comprehensive view of your stormwater system assets.

  1. Verify you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. At the top of the site, click Groups.
  3. Browse to the Stormwater Office Users group and locate the Stormwater Dashboard app. Click View Dashboard to launch the dashboard.
  4. View the stormwater system statistics on the General tab, click the Pipe tab to view the pipe details, and click the BMP tab to view the BMP details.

Add data in ArcGIS Pro

In the workflows below, you will be taking the role of an editor adding data in ArcGIS Pro. If you have known locations of assets or as-built drawings to work from, the following workflows can demonstrate using ArcGIS Pro to add data to your stormwater system.

Note:

The first time you open the Stormwater Data Manager map in ArcGIS Pro, the layers will show as broken. Follow the steps to Configure the Stormwater Data Manager ArcGIS Pro project to fix your layers.

Add manholes and pipes

As an editor, you can add manholes and pipes to the map in ArcGIS Pro. If you already have manholes, you can complete steps 8 through 10 to add pipes between the manholes.

  1. Open the Stormwater Data Manager ArcGIS Pro project and sign in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. In the Catalog pane, expand Maps and double-click Stormwater Data Manager to open the map.
  3. On the Edit tab, in the Snapping group, click Snapping and turn snapping on.
  4. On the Edit tab, in the Features group, click Create.

    The Create Features pane appears.

  5. Select the Manhole template from the Templates list, fill in the attributes, and add the manhole to the map.
  6. On the Map tab, in the Selection group, click Attributes and fill in the remaining attributes. Select the Manhole template from the Templates list in ArcGIS Pro
  7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 to add the remaining manholes to the map.
  8. Select the Pipe: Gravity template from the Templates list and fill in the attributes.
    As a best practice, digitize in the direction that wastewater flows.
  9. Snap and click the start of the line to the first manhole to begin digitizing the pipe. Snap to the next manhole and double-click to complete the sketch.
  10. Open the Attributes pane and fill in the remaining attributes.
  11. Repeat steps 8 through 10 to draw in the remaining pipes between the rest of the manholes.

Add catch basins

As an editor, you can add gravity pipes to the map in ArcGIS Pro.

  1. Open the Stormwater Data Manager ArcGIS Pro project and verify that you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. In the Catalog pane, expand Maps and double-click Stormwater Data Manager to open the map.
  3. On the Edit tab, in the Snapping group, click Snapping and turn snapping on.
  4. On the Edit tab, in the Features group, click Create.

    The Create Features pane appears.

  5. Select the Catch Basin: Sediment Trap group template from the Templates list and fill in the attributes.

  6. Add Sediment Trap to the map.
  7. On the Map tab, in the Selection group, click Attributes and fill in the remaining attributes.
  8. Select the Pipes: Gravity template from the Templates list and fill in the attributes.
  9. Snap the end of the gravity pipe from the sediment trap to the to the primary gravity pipe.

  10. Open the Attributes pane and fill in the remaining attributes.

Add a BMP boundary

As an editor, you can add a BMP Boundary to the system.

  1. Open the Stormwater Data Manager ArcGIS Pro project and verify you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. In the Catalog pane, expand Maps and double-click Stormwater Data Manager to open the map.
  3. On the Edit tab, in the Features group, click Create.

    The Create Features pane appears.

  4. Choose the BMP Boundary with centroid BMP Point template and fill in the attributes.
  5. Add the boundary by digitizing a polygon on the map at the desired location.
  6. On the Map tab, in the Selection group, click Attributes and fill in the attributes for both the polygon and point feature added to the map.

    The boundary is added to the map and is available to be viewed and reviewed by others in the organization.

Add features from an as-built drawing

As an editor, you can add assets such as manholes to the system from an as-built drawing.

  1. After receiving the Stormwater Data Manager editing ArcGIS Pro project, sign in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. In the Catalog pane, expand Maps and double-click Stormwater Data Manager to open the map.
  3. On the Map tab, in the Layers group, click Add Data. Browse to the location of the as-built drawing, select it, and click OK to add it to the map.
  4. With the image selected in the Contents pane, browse to the Raster Layer ribbon. On the Appearance tab, in the Effects group, change the Layer Transparency setting to 50%.
  5. On the Imagery tab, in the Alignment group, select Georeferencing.
    If you are unfamiliar with georeferencing, review Overview of georeferencing in the ArcGIS Pro help.
  6. On the Georeferencing tab, in the Adjust group, click Add Control Points.
    1. Add a minimum of two control points to connect your image to your known map positions.
    2. Once you have added all the control points, browse to the Georeferencing tab and click Save.
  7. On the Edit tab, in the Snapping group, click Snapping and turn snapping on.
  8. On the Edit tab, in the Features group, click Create.

    The Create Features pane appears.

  9. Select an asset from the template list and add the asset to the map where it corresponds to the georeferenced as-built drawing.
  10. On the Map tab, in the Selection group, click Attributes and fill in the attributes.
  11. Remove the image from the Contents pane once digitizing is complete.

Add map notes

As an editor, you can add a map note to the system.

  1. Open the Stormwater Data Manager ArcGIS Pro project and verify that you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. In the Catalog pane, expand Maps and double-click Stormwater Data Manager to open the map.
  3. On the Edit tab, in the Features group, click Create.

    The Create Features pane appears.

  4. In the Template list, expand the Map Notes folder and choose a Map Note option. Add the map note by digitizing a polygon on the map at the desired location.
  5. On the Map tab, in the Selection group, click Attributes and fill in the attributes.

    The map note is added to the map and is available to be viewed and reviewed by others in the organization.
