Use Road Closures

The Road Closures solution delivers a set of capabilities that help you inventory road closures and related detours, communicate closures and detours with the public, and share authoritative closure information with consumer applications, such as Waze.

In this topic, you’ll learn how to use the solution by assuming the role of a user and performing the workflows below.

Note:
Use your organization's data or configured apps to follow these workflows.

Create road closures

You will assume the role of an employee in the public works department. You have received plans for streets that will need to be closed. You will draw the closures on the map, place the road blocks, and identify the detour routes.

  1. In a browser, sign in to your ArcGIS organization, and then browse to the Road Closures solution.
  2. View the Road Closures app.

The Road Closures app opens with the Create New Closure widget open on the right.

  3. In the Create New Closure widget, check the Use Preset Values (new features only) check box.
  4. Type the contact information for the closure in the appropriate text boxes.
  5. In the Identifier text box, type a unique ID.
    Note:

This information will be added to each closure, road block, and detour you create to associate it with the same event.

  6. On the map, use the search field or pan and zoom to the closure location.
  7. In the widget, click the Both Directions template.
  8. Click the map and begin to draw a line at an intersection; click to add a vertex and double-click to finish the closure line.

After you finish drawing the closure on the map, a Road Closures form appears on the right.

  9. Complete the form with as much information as possible.
  10. Click Save.
  11. Click the Road Blocks template.
  12. On the map, click the intersection on one side of the closure.
    Note:

The road block is automatically populated with the information from the closure it intersects, so you don’t have to reenter it.

  13. Click Save.
  14. Click the Road Detours template.
  15. On the map, sketch the alternate route around the closure and double-click to finish drawing the line.
    Note:

If the detour intersects the closure at the start and end, it automatically pulls the details from the closure.

  16. Click Save.

Update closure details

You will continue as an employee in the public works department. Dates for a road closure have been extended. You will update the end date of the closure and its associated road blocks and detour.

  1. In a browser, sign in to your ArcGIS organization, and then browse to the Road Closures solution.
  2. View the Road Closures app.
  3. In the upper right of the app, click the Update Existing Closures button to open the widget.
  4. In the Update Existing Closures widget, click the Extent tool.
  5. On the map, drag a box around the road closure, including the associated road blocks and detour.
  6. In the Update Existing Closures pop-up, click the End Time drop-down arrow and choose a new date.
  7. Click Save.

Closures that are no longer active, with an end date that is before today, will continue to show on the map but will have a transparency applied. This feature is helpful when you have reoccurring events; for example, past closures can be selected and updated with new dates.
