Use Fire Hydrant Inspection

The Fire Hydrant Inspection solution delivers a set of capabilities that helps you inventory fire hydrants, update operational status on a regular schedule, and monitor the progress of fire personnel performing routine hydrant inspections.

In this topic, you’ll learn how to use the solution by assuming the role of a user and performing the workflows below.

Develop fire hydrant inventory

A field assessment of fire hydrants is the most efficient way to develop a hydrant inventory for a fire department. In some cases, fire departments may be able to access hydrant data maintained by the local water utility and use that data to start the collection of operational status. In other cases, hydrant data may not exist and the field assessment used to capture the location of hydrants and their operational status.

You will assume the role of a fire fighter in a fire department. In this workflow, you are asked to use the ArcGIS Field Maps mobile app to access your Fire Hydrant Inspection and inventory hydrants in your community.

Collect new hydrant

To collect a new fire hydrant in the field, complete the following steps:

1. Download ArcGIS Field Maps onto your mobile device.
2. Open the app on your mobile device, and sign in to your ArcGIS organization.
3. Tap Fire Hydrant Inspection to open it.
4. Tap the search box and type a local address, and then tap the suggested address in the search result list to zoom to that location on the map.
5. Tap Collect Here and tap Operable.
6. Swipe up on the form and tap Fire Hydrant ID and enter the identifier.
7. Tap Station to enter the station response area.
8. Tap Location to enter a more detailed description of the location.
9. Swipe up and tap Inspected On to choose today's date.
10. Tap Pumped and choose a value.
11. Tap Defects, then tap Hard to Open and choose a value. Add other key characteristics in the form.
12. Swipe up and tap Notes to enter any other observations noted in the field.
13. When you're done, tap Submit.
14. Repeat steps 5 through 13 for each fire hydrant.

Update operational status

To update the operational status of an existing fire hydrant in the field, complete the following steps:

1. Download ArcGIS Field Maps onto your mobile device if you haven't already.
2. Open the app on your mobile device, and sign in to your ArcGIS organization.
3. Tap Fire Hydrant Inspection to open it.
4. Tap search, type your hydrant identifier and tap hydrant identifier in the search results.
5. Tap Edit and swipe up on the form.
6. Swipe up and tap Inspected On to choose today's date.
7. Tap Operable and choose No.
8. Tap Pumped and choose a value.
9. When you're done, tap Submit.
10. Repeat steps 4 through 9 for each fire hydrant.

Monitor fire hydrant inspection program

You will now assume the role of fire command staff and will use the Fire Hydrant Dashboard to monitor the progress of fire hydrant inspections.

To monitor the progress of your fire hydrant inspection program, complete the following steps:

1. In a browser, go to the Fire Hydrant Dashboard app.
2. Click the Station drop-down in the left panel and choose a station.

   You can now see all fire hydrants in your district on the map. On the bottom of the dashboard, you can see the total number of hydrants in the station area along with the number of operable and inoperable hydrants in the same area.

3. Click the Inoperable bar in the chart to see inoperable fire hydrants.
4. Click the Inspection Date drop-down and choose Last 30 Days in the left panel.

   You can now see how many hydrants have been inspected in the last 30 days.

5. Adjust the Pressure slider to identify hydrants with low pressure.
6. Close the app.
