Manage timelines

When you create a timeline, it is stored in a map. A map can contain one or multiple timelines at once. You can Delete, Rename, Edit, and Define Categories on your timeline to help manage it.

Delete a timeline

To delete a timeline do the following:

1. Activate the map containing the timeline you want to delete.
2. Expand Timelines in the Contents pane.
3. To open a timeline, right-click the timeline and click Open Timeline .
4. To delete a timeline, right-click the timeline and click Delete .

Rename a timeline

To rename a timeline, do the following:

1. Right-click the timeline and click Properties .
2. Click the General tab on the Timeline Properties dialog box.
3. Edit the Name property.
4. Click OK.

Edit timeline layer properties

To edit a timeline layer's properties, do the following:

1. Expand the timeline.
2. Right-click the timeline layer that you want to edit and click Properties .
3. Optionally, edit the Name property.
4. Optionally, select the field you want to display in the ToolTip when you hover over data in the timeline from the Display field property drop-down arrow.
5. Optionally, select the field that you want to use to categorize the layer data in timeline lanes from the Category field property drop-down arrow.
6. Click OK.

Edit timeline metadata

To edit the timeline metadata, do the following:

1. In the Contents pane, right-click the timeline and click Properties .
2. Click the Metadata tab on the Timeline Properties dialog box.
3. Select Timeline has its own metadata from the drop-down arrow.
4. Edit the metadata properties.
5. Click OK.

Define Categories

Category Definition enables a user to create additional swimlanes in a timeline defined by a Category Field. To define a category do the following:

1. Create or open a timeline.
2. On the Timeline tab, in the View group, click Category Definition.

   The Timeline Swimlanes Properties menu appears.

3. In the Timeline Swimlane Properties menu, on the Categories Definition tab, click the Category Field drop-down menu.
4. In the Category Field drop-down menu choose a field to categorize.

   The Value table appears.

5. In the Value table, select values to create swimlanes in the timeline.
6. In the Timeline Swimlane Properties menu, on the Categories Definition tab, click OK.
