Description
The Upgrade Dataset tool upgrades the annotation dataset in place. It does not make a copy of the data before upgrading.
Once upgraded, the annotation dataset will no longer be available for use in previous versions. The following table describes how annotation is supported:
ArcGIS version | ArcGIS Desktop annotation | ArcGIS AllSource annotation 2.x | ArcGIS AllSource annotation 3.x |
---|---|---|---|
ArcGIS Desktop 10.x | Full read, modify, and write access. | Not supported. Any feature class linked to it or in the same feature dataset will be read-only. | Not supported. Any feature class linked to it or in the same feature dataset will be read-only. |
ArcGIS AllSource 1.x | Read-only access. | Not supported. Any feature class linked to it or in the same feature dataset will be read-only. | Not supported. Any feature class linked to it or in the same feature dataset will be read-only. |
ArcGIS AllSource 2.x | Read-only access. | Full read, modify, and write access. | Not supported. Any feature class linked to it or in the same feature dataset will be read-only. |
ArcGIS AllSource 3.x | Read-only access. | Full read access. Partial modify and write access. It may be downgraded based on symbols and annotation properties used. | Full read, modify, and write access. |
In an ArcGIS Desktop annotation feature class, graphics that are not text graphics are not supported by the upgrade process and will be deleted. A list of their OIDs will be created and included in the tool's messages.
Solution
Ensure that you have a backup of the data before upgrading.
If you need to continue to use the annotation feature class in ArcGIS Desktop, make a copy of it and only upgrade one version.
If the annotation feature class contains graphics that are not text, move them out of the annotation feature class to edit them in ArcGIS AllSource.
