24177: Elevation source and tiling scheme vertical units do not match

You are sharing a web elevation layer, but the vertical units of the elevation source and the tiling scheme do not match. It is recommended that you ensure that the vertical coordinate system units of the elevation source and web layer's tiling scheme are the same. Otherwise, the web layer may appear exaggerated or flattened.

For example, you may encounter this warning if the elevation source’s vertical unit is feet and the tiling scheme’s vertical unit is meters. In this case, either update the tiling scheme to use the vertical coordinate system of the elevation source or reproject the elevation source to use the vertical coordinate system of the tiling scheme. To maintain unit consistency, also ensure that the horizontal and vertical coordinate system units are the same.

If no vertical coordinate system is defined for an elevation source or tiling scheme, the horizontal coordinate system unit is used as the vertical unit.

Solutions

Do one of the following:

  • Reproject the elevation source using the Project Raster tool and use the Raster Calculator tool to convert the pixel values.

If you are sharing the elevation layer in a web scene with a basemap or existing cached web layer, the tiling scheme is defined by the basemap or web layer. The elevation source should be reprojected to the vertical coordinate system of the basemap or web layer.

  • Use the Generate Tile Cache Tiling Scheme tool to create a custom tiling scheme in the vertical coordinate system of the elevation source. In the Share As Web Layer pane, on the Configuration tab, click the Tiling Scheme drop-down arrow, click Tiling scheme file, and select the tiling scheme .xml file you created.

If you intend to use the web elevation layer in a web scene with other cached web layers, ensure that the tiling scheme you created can be used for all the layers.

  • If you are using a local scene Local Scene in which the horizontal coordinate systems of the elevation source and scene match and the horizontal and vertical units of the elevation source match, use the Auto-suggest tiling scheme option.

In the Share As Web Layer pane, on the Configuration tab, click the Tiling Scheme drop-down arrow, and click Auto-suggest. A suggested tiling scheme is generated in the horizontal coordinate system of the scene with matching horizontal and vertical units.

  • Do nothing. The web elevation layer may appear exaggerated or flattened.
