Export, import, and distribute military symbology

You can use Favorites to distribute commonly used military symbols to other Military Overlay users. It is also used to share military symbols between projects and how symbol sets are archived for record keeping.

Export military symbols to a file

Exporting your favorites saves all of the symbols in Favorites to a Military Overlay favorites file (*.mofav).

To save military symbols to a Military Overlay favorites file, complete the following steps:

  1. Open Military Overlay.
  2. Click Favorites.
  3. Click Export.
  4. On the Save File dialog box, browse to a folder location or accept the default location, and provide a name for the new favorites file.
  5. Click Save.

Import military symbols from a file

To add military symbols from a Military Overlay favorites file to your project, complete the following steps:

Caution:

Backward compatibility problems may occur when using feature layers created using ArcGIS AllSource 1.3 Military Overlay. To fix backward compatibility issues that may occur when dealing with symbols created in ArcGIS AllSource 1.3, navigate to and delete the file <System Drive>\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\ESRI\ArcGISAllSource\MilitaryOverlaySettings.mssf

  1. Open Military Overlay.
  2. Click Favorites.
  3. Click Import.
  4. On the Open File dialog box, browse to the folder location of the favorites file.
  5. Click OK.

    The military symbols in the favorites file are appended to the favorites list. Exact duplicate symbols are not imported.

Save a symbol as in PNG format

To save a single symbol as a Portable Network Graphics (PNG) image file (.png), complete the following steps:

  1. Open Military Overlay.
  2. Click Favorites.
  3. Select a symbol from the list.
  4. Click Save Image As Save.
  5. Provide a file name on the Save As dialog box and click Save.

The image is saved to the path and file specified.

Copy a symbol to the clipboard

To copy a symbol to the system clipboard, complete the following steps:

  1. Open Military Overlay.
  2. Click Favorites.
  3. Select a symbol from the list.
  4. Click Copy Image To Clipboard Copy.

The symbol is now in the system clipboard and can be copied to other applications such as Microsoft PowerPoint or Microsoft Word.
