The Replace Geometry tool replaces the geometry of a selected feature with geometry you draw using feature construction tools. This tool is available in the Modify Features pane.
When you use this tool consider the following:
- This tool can be used to create geometry for unmatched geocoded features containing null geometry.
- To partially replace segments of a feature, use the Reshape tool.
Replace a point feature
To replace an existing point feature with a point feature you create, complete the following steps:
- Add your data and configure settings for editing.
Confirm that the feature layer you are editing is editable, the coordinate system assigned to the active map is suitable for the type of edits you're performing, and snapping is configured to help you work efficiently and accurately.
Tip:
To enable editing for a layer, check the check box for the layer in the Contents pane, on the List By Editing tab .
- On the ribbon Edit tab, click Modify in the Features group.
The Modify Features pane appears.
- Click the Replace Geometry tool .
To find the tool, expand Reshape, or type Replace in the Search text box.
- Click the Select a feature tool , and select the point feature you are replacing.
Tip:
If you select more than one feature, reselect the feature. Alternatively, click the feature in the pane selection view to flash it in the map, right-click and click Only Select This .
- Click the Point tool in the tool pane, and click the map.
This tool automatically replaces the selected feature when you click the map and create a point feature.
To create a point feature at an offset, click the Replace Point at End of Line tool .
Replace a line feature
To replace an existing line feature with a line feature you draw in a map, complete the following steps:
- Add your data and configure settings for editing.
Confirm that the feature layer you are editing is editable, the coordinate system assigned to the active map is suitable for the type of edits you're performing, and snapping is configured to help you work efficiently and accurately.
Tip:
To enable editing for a layer, check the check box for the layer in the Contents pane, on the List By Editing tab .
- On the ribbon Edit tab, click Modify in the Features group.
The Modify Features pane appears.
- Click the Replace Geometry tool .
To find the tool, expand Reshape, or type Replace in the Search text box.
- Click the Select a feature tool , and select the line feature you are replacing.
Tip:
If you select more than one feature, reselect the feature. Alternatively, click the feature in the pane selection view to flash it in the map, right-click and click Only Select This .
- Click the Replace Line tool in the tool pane, and create a line feature.
Tip:
To edit sketch geometry, enable Vertex Editing on the construction toolbar.
Alternatively, click the Replace Freehand tool in the tool pane and create a freehand polyline feature. This tool automatically replaces the selected feature when you click the map to finish sketching.
- Click Finish on the construction toolbar, or press F2 to replace the selected feature.
Replace a polygon feature
To replace an existing polygon feature with a polygon feature you draw in a map, complete the following steps:
- Add your data and configure settings for editing.
Confirm that the feature layer you are editing is editable, the coordinate system assigned to the active map is suitable for the type of edits you're performing, and snapping is configured to help you work efficiently and accurately.
Tip:
To enable editing for a layer, check the check box for the layer in the Contents pane, on the List By Editing tab .
- On the ribbon Edit tab, click Modify in the Features group.
The Modify Features pane appears.
- Click the Replace Geometry tool .
To find the tool, expand Reshape, or type Replace in the Search text box.
- Click the Select a feature tool , and select the polygon feature you are replacing.
Tip:
If you select more than one feature, reselect the feature. Alternatively, click the feature in the pane selection view to flash it in the map, right-click and click Only Select This .
- Click the Replace a Polygon tool in the tool pane, and draw a polygon feature.
Tip:
To edit sketch geometry, enable Vertex Editing on the construction toolbar.
Alternatively, click the Replace a Polygon drop-down arrow , and choose one of the construction tools described in the following table. These tools automatically replace the selected feature when you click the map to finish the sketch.

- Click Finish on the construction toolbar, or press F2 to replace the selected feature.
