You can create range fans, wedges, and arcs interactively or from known center point, minimum and maximum distances, and horizontal start and end angles. Wedges are a special case of range fans that begin at the center point.
Create range fans interactively
To create range fans interactively by clicking the map, complete the following steps:
- On the ribbon, click the Insert tab.
- In the Measurements group, click Distance and Direction .
- In the Distance and Direction pane, click the Sector tab.
- Under Type, click Fan.
- Click Map Point Tool .
- Click a location on the map to designate the starting point of the range fan.
- Optionally, choose a unit of measure from the Units drop-down menu.
- Optionally, choose an angle unit from the Angle drop-down menu.
- Click a location on the map to designate the minimum distance and horizontal start angle.
- Click a location on the map to designate the maximum distance and horizontal end angle.
A range fan is created and added to the map.
Create range fans from known coordinates
To create range fans using known coordinates, minimum and maximum distances, and horizontal start and end angles, complete the following steps:
- In the Distance and Direction pane, click the Sector tab.
- Under Type, click Fan.
- Provide a coordinate in the Starting Point text box.
- Provide a distance in the Minimum Distance text box.
- Provide a distance in the Maximum Distance text box.
- Optionally, choose a unit of measure from the Units drop-down menu.
- Provide an angle in the Horizontal Start Angle text box.
- Provide an angle in the Horizontal End Angle text box.
- Optionally, choose an angle unit from the Angle drop-down menu.
- Press Enter or click Create Sector.
A range fan is created and added to the map.
Create wedges interactively
To create wedges interactively by clicking the map, complete the following steps:
- On the ribbon, click the Insert tab.

- In the Distance and Direction pane, click the Sector tab.
- Under Type, click Wedge.
- Click Map Point Tool .
- Click a location on the map to designate the starting point of the wedge.
- Optionally, choose a unit of measure from the Units drop-down menu.
- Optionally, choose an angle unit from the Angle drop-down menu.
- Click a location on the map to designate the distance and horizontal start angle.
- Click a location on the map to designate the horizontal end angle.
A wedge is created and added to the map.

Create arcs interactively
To create arcs interactively by clicking the map, complete the following steps:
- In the Distance and Direction pane, click the Sector tab.
- Under Type, click Arc.
- Click Map Point Tool .
- Click a location on the map to designate the base point of the arc.
- Optionally, choose a unit of measure from the Units drop-down menu.
- Optionally, choose an angle unit from the Angle drop-down menu.
- Click a location on the map to designate the distance and horizontal start angle.
- Click a location on the map to designate the horizontal end angle.
An arc is created and added to the map.
Create arcs from known coordinates
To create arcs using known coordinates, a maximum distance, and horizontal start and end angles, complete the following steps:
- In the Distance and Direction pane, click the Sector tab.
- Under Type, click Arc.
- Provide a coordinate in the Starting Point text box.
- Provide a distance in the Maximum Distance text box.
- Optionally, choose a unit of measure from the Units drop-down menu.
- Provide an angle in the Horizontal Start Angle text box.
- Provide an angle in the Horizontal End Angle text box.
- Optionally, choose an angle unit from the Angle drop-down menu.
- Press Enter or click Create Sector.
An arc is created and added to the map.
