Create features with right angles

This tool creates single-part and multipart polyline and polygon features with segments at right angles to the previous segment. It is useful when lines and area features must have perpendicular boundaries.

When you create z-enabled 3D polyline and polygon features, they are assigned the current z-coordinate elevation setting. For steps to specify z-values, see Specify an elevation for 3D features.

To create features with right angles, complete the following steps:

  1. Add the data and configure the editing settings.

Confirm that the feature layer you are editing is editable, the coordinate system assigned to the active map is suitable for the type of edits you're performing, and snapping is configured to help you work efficiently and accurately.

  2. On the Map tab, in the Features group, click Edit Create Features.
  3. In the Contents pane, select the polyline layer you want to add features to.
  4. On the Edit tab, in the Snapping group, click Snapping List By Snapping, enable your snapping preferences, and move the pointer back to the map.
  5. Click Right Angle Line Right Angle Segment on the Mapview toolbar.
  6. Create the line segments by doing either or both of the following:
    • Click the map. The first two clicks define the direction of the first segment, and subsequent clicks are constrained to right angles of the previous segments.
    • Right-click and use the context menu to specify x,y,z coordinate locations, distance, and direction. The first two coordinates define the direction of the first segment. Subsequent points are constrained along right angles to the first segment.
  7. To finish the feature, click Finish Finish, or press F2.
  8. On the Mapview toolbar, click Save All Edits.

Optionally, on the ribbon, in the Manage Edits group, click Save All Edits Save Edits.

Alternatively, on the ribbon, in the Manage Edits group, click Save All Edits Save Edits.

  9. On the Edit tab, in the Close group, click Close Edit Mode Close.

Optionally, continue editing until you're ready to close Editing mode.

Alternatively, continue editing until you're ready to close Editing mode.

Edit Mode is enabled and the Edit tab appears on the ribbon.
