ArcGIS AllSource strives to maintain backward compatibility. That is, feature layers created in a prior release should continue to work in a current release. In rare cases, compatibility changes may occur due to the new functionality being introduced. Situations in which version compatibility may be an issue are described here.
Compatibility at ArcGIS AllSource 1.5
In order to support future work with MIL-STD-2525 and APP6 standards, changes to the underlying UI JSON were made at ArcGIS AllSource 1.5. With these changes two issues will arise in specific situations that can cause Military Overlay layers to behave incorrectly. These situations are described below, and solutions provided when possible.
- Project package files .ppkx that contain Military Overlay symbols that are created in ArcGIS AllSource 1.4 cannot be used in Military Overlay in 1.5. The source UI JSON has changed to support future 2525 and APP6 standards. Only the project package files are affected by this change. The original .asrx project files are not affected. The solution is to open the original project in ArcGIS AllSource 1.5 and use Military Overlay directly or to export the project package from 1.5.
- ArcGIS AllSource 1.4 projects that contain military symbols of MIL-STD-2525D Change 1 that are opened in ArcGIS AllSource 1.5 will have string fields changed from 20 characters in length to 30 characters in length. Layers that are affected will not be able to add new symbols in 1.5. The solution is to change the field length of the affected fields from 20 to 30, and then append ten zeros (0000000000) to the end of the field values.
Backwards compatibility after ArcGIS AllSource 1.3
Changes in the underlying storage of military symbols for MIL-STD-2525 and APP2 standards at ArcGIS AllSource 1.3 affect their usage. Backward compatibility is not supported in the following Military Overlay use cases:
- Adding new or editing existing symbols in feature layers created using ArcGIS AllSource 1.3 is not supported.
- Favorite symbols created using ArcGIS AllSource 1.3 are not supported.
- Importing Favorite symbols created using ArcGIS AllSource 1.3 is not supported.
Note:
When using feature layers created in ArcGIS AllSource 1.3, a banner appears in the Military Overlay pane with the warning: Unsupported Military Overlay Layers detected. Versions of Military Overlay made with ArcGIS AllSource 1.3 are no longer supported.
