Save a layer file

A layer can exist outside of the map or project as a layer file Layer File (.lyrx). This allows others to access the layers you've built. You can share layers over the network or by email, or upload them to your ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise portal.

When you add a layer file to a map, it draws exactly as it was saved, provided the data referenced by the layer is accessible. To save the layer and its data together, create a layer package instead. You can also save and share stand-alone tables as layer files.

  1. Select the layer you want to save as a layer file in the Contents pane.
  2. On the Disseminate tab, in the Share group, click the Layer drop-down menu Layer. In the Layer drop-down menu, click Save As Layer File Layer File. Alternatively, right-click the selected layer, point to the Sharing menu, and click Save As Layer File Layer File.
  3. On the Save Layer(s) As LYRX File dialog box, browse to a folder location or accept the default location. Provide a name for the new layer file or accept the default name.
  4. Click Save.
