There are a few display limitations when displaying symbols in 3D or when working with animated symbols.
Unexpected drawing in 3D
Certain symbol and geometry combinations are not supported and may result in unexpected drawing when some symbol properties must be ignored. This most typically occurs in 3D layers in scene views and with animated symbols.
Some common situations include the following:
- Multipatches drawn with any polygon symbol other than one that contains only a solid color fill symbol layer
- Gradient or hatch fills in 3D
- Gradient strokes in 3D
Limitations of symbols in 3D
The following limitations exist with symbols in 3D:
- Polygon outlines (stroke symbol layers within polygon symbols) draw 1 pixel wide in the following situations, regardless of the stroke width value:
- When the stroke profile is strip and no symbol effect is present
- When the feature layer is extruded and no symbol effect is present
- Caps and joins always draw as type butt on a strip, regardless of setting. This means you cannot achieve the appearance of a dotted strip using very small dashes with round caps. Use round markers placed along the line to achieve a dotted appearance instead.
- Symbol effect and marker placement properties are calculated in meters in 3D. A conversion of 1 point = 25 meters is applied when the layer is in page units.
- You may encounter memory limitations if you create symbols with excessive dashes or markers along lines.
- A procedural symbol layer will not draw if the rule package it references cannot be found in the project directory. Click the Rule button in the procedural symbol layer in the Symbology pane to choose a valid rule package to reference.
Limitations of symbol effects and marker placement parameters in 3D
The following symbol effect or marker placement parameters are not available in 3D:
- Options for Donut and Offset effects
- Clipping options for polygon marker placements
Limitations with animated symbols
The following are the limitations of animated symbols:
- In a 3D context, animated symbols do not support face culling.
- In a 2D context, animated symbols have the following limitations:
- Feature blending is not honored.
- Layer blending and layer transparency do not appear as expected when set on a parent group layer of a layer that includes animated symbols.
- Halos are not honored on point symbols that contain animated marker symbol layers.
- Symbol effects are not supported on symbols that contain animated marker symbol layers.
- Animated symbols are not animated in a 2D preview.
- Aggregation (feature clustering and feature binning) does not support animated symbols.
- Marker spacing and rotation may be incorrect when animated markers are placed along a line.
- Placement may be incorrect when animated markers fill polygons, and the clipping options are not honored.
