Create point features

The Point tool Point creates point features. Point features store one set of coordinates per feature and can be used to represent vehicles, point of interest, buildings, events, or entry control points. This tool is available in the Mapview toolbar when Edit Mode is enabled.

Create point features in a new layer

To create a new memory point feature class and add points, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Map tab, in the Features group, click Edit Create Features.
  2. On the Edit tab, in the New Features group, click New Point Layer Point layer.

    A new layer named Point is added to the map.

    Note:

    New feature layers are initially created in a memory workspace. Features and attributes can be quickly captured but must be saved to a local workspace before the project is closed. To save a memory workspace, right-click the new feature layer in Contents and select Save. The features are saved to the project default geodatabase. Alternatively, if the layer is not saved, you are prompted to save it before the project is closed. If you do not save the memory workspace when the project is closed, the information is deleted.

  3. Click the map to create the points with the Point tool Point.

    Alternatively, right-click, click Absolute X,Y,Z Move To and type the coordinate location.

  4. Optionally, add an attribute label to the new feature
    1. Click Edit on the Edit toolbar in the Features group.

      The Edit Feature pane appears.

    2. Type a value in the Label text box, and press Enter.

      The label is added to the feature in the map.

  5. On the Mapview toolbar, click Save All Edits.

    Optionally, on the ribbon, in the Manage Edits group, click Save All Edits Save Edits.

    Alternatively, on the ribbon, in the Manage Edits group, click Save All Edits Save Edits.

  6. On the Edit tab, in the Close group, click Close Edit Mode Close.

    Optionally, continue editing until you're ready to close Editing mode.

    Alternatively, continue editing until you're ready to close Editing mode.

    Edit Mode is enabled and the Edit tab appears on the ribbon.

Create point features in an existing layer

When you use this tool, consider z-aware point features are assigned z-values based on your current elevation settings

To create individual point features, complete the following steps:

  1. Add the data and configure the editing settings.

    Confirm that the feature layer you are editing is editable, the coordinate system assigned to the active map is suitable for the type of edits you're performing, and snapping is configured to help you work efficiently and accurately.

  2. On the Map tab, in the Features group, click Edit Create Features.
  3. In the Contents pane select the layer you want to edit if not already selected. By choosing a point layer, the Point tool Point activates as the default tool. In the Mapview toolbar, select the tool you want to use.
  4. Click the map to create the points with the Point tool Point.

    Alternatively, right-click, click Absolute X,Y,Z Move To and type the coordinate location.

  5. On the Mapview toolbar, click Save All Edits.

    Optionally, on the ribbon, in the Manage Edits group, click Save All Edits Save Edits.

    Alternatively, on the ribbon, in the Manage Edits group, click Save All Edits Save Edits.

  6. On the Edit tab, in the Close group, click Close Edit Mode Close.

    Optionally, continue editing until you're ready to close Editing mode.

    Alternatively, continue editing until you're ready to close Editing mode.

    Edit Mode is enabled and the Edit tab appears on the ribbon.

Create point features from coordinates in an existing layer

Create features in a point layer using decimal degrees, MGRS, UTM, or other coordinate notations.

To create point features from coordinates, complete the following steps:

  1. Add the data and configure the editing settings.

    Confirm that the feature layer you are editing is editable, the coordinate system assigned to the active map is suitable for the type of edits you're performing, and snapping is configured to help you work efficiently and accurately.

  2. On the Map tab, in the Features group, click Edit Create Features.
  3. In the Contents pane, select the layer you want to edit if not already selected.
  4. Click the Absolute X,Y,Z Move To tool on the Mapview toolbar.

    The Absolute X,Y,Z dialog box appears.

  5. Select the coordinate notation type next to the coordinate value.
    • m—Meters
    • ft—International feet
    • ftUS—U.S. Survey feet
    • dd—Decimal Degrees.
    • dms—Degrees Minutes Seconds
    • ddm—Degrees Decimal Minutes
    • MGRS—Military Grid Reference System
    • USNG—U.S. National Grid System
    • UTM—Universal Transverse Mercator
  6. Type the value for the selected coordinate notation.
  7. Optionally, select a Z unit and type the value for the new point.
    • mi—Miles
    • ft—International feet
    • ftUS—U.S. Survey feet
    • yd—Yards
    • km—Kilometers
    • m—Meters
  8. Press Enter.

    A new point is added to the coordinate location.

  9. On the Mapview toolbar, click Save All Edits.

    Optionally, on the ribbon, in the Manage Edits group, click Save All Edits Save Edits.

    Alternatively, on the ribbon, in the Manage Edits group, click Save All Edits Save Edits.

  10. On the Edit tab, in the Close group, click Close Edit Mode Close.

    Optionally, continue editing until you're ready to close Editing mode.

    Edit Mode is enabled and the Edit tab appears on the ribbon.
