Organize layers

Remove, rename, and change the drawing order of layers using the tools in the Organize group in the Layer tab of the ribbon.

Removing a layer

Each layer you add to the map can be removed, with the exception of the basemap. Your map must contain a basemap, whether it is one of the default services from ArcGIS Online or your own. For more information, see Configure basemaps.

  1. Open the Map Contents panel.
  2. Select the layer to remove.
  3. Click Remove on the Layer tab of the ArcGIS Map Web Part's ribbon.
    Remove selected layer

Renaming a layer

  1. Open the Map Contents panel.
  2. Select the layer to remove.
  3. Click Rename on the Layer tab of the Map Web Part ribbon.
    Rename button
  4. Type the new layer name and press Enter.

Changing the layer draw order

The order in which layers are listed in the Map Contents panel represents how the layers are drawn on the map. Within the map, the layers listed at the top will draw over those listed below them, and so on, down the list. You can easily move layers in the Map Contents panel to adjust their drawing order using the Bring Forward and Send Backward buttons on the ribbon.

In addition to setting the drawing order of layers, you can use transparency settings to further configure how layers display on the map. See Layer transparency for more information.

  1. Open the Map Contents panel.
  2. Select the desired layer to move.
  3. Choose whether to bring the layer forward or send the layer backward:
    • Click Bring Forward to move the layer up in the Map Contents panel. The layer draws in front of the layers listed below it in the Map Contents panel.
    • Click Send Backward to move the layer down in the Map Contents panel. The layer draws behind the layers listed above it in the Map Contents panel.
