I installed Esri Maps for Office, but the Esri Maps tab does not show up on the Ribbon

Occasionally, the Esri Maps for Office add-in is not enabled by default in Excel or PowerPoint. To fix this issue, manually enable the add-in for PowerPoint using the following steps:

1. Click the File tab on the Ribbon.
2. Click Options to display the PowerPoint Options or Excel Options dialog box.
3. Click Add-Ins and find the Esri Maps for Office add-in. It should be listed under the Inactive Application Add-Ins. The following screen shot displays the PowerPoint Options dialog box, but it is similar to the Excel Options dialog box:

   

4. At the bottom of the dialog box, set the Manage drop-down menu to COM Add-Ins and click Go.
5. In the COM Add-ins dialog box, check the box next to Esri Maps for Office and click OK. You should now see the Esri Maps tab on the Ribbon.

   

How do I install the language packs?

To install Esri Maps for Office in the native operating system (OS) language, you need to first install the Microsoft Office language pack in the desired language and then set the language as default display language. Set the default display language in Microsoft Office using the following steps:

1. Open a Microsoft Office program, such as Excel.
2. Click the File tab and clickOptions .
3. In the Excel Options dialog box, click Language.
4. Under the Choose Display and Help Languages heading, select the display language that you want to use, and click Set as Default.
5. After you change the default display language, close and restart Microsoft Office.

How do I tell which version of Esri Maps for Office I have installed?

To see which version of Esri Maps for Office is currently installed, click the File menu and select Esri Maps. The current version number is listed below the Learn more about hardware acceleration link.

Why doesn't my spreadsheet appear in the Add Excel data wizard?

Esri Maps for Office recognizes tables and named ranges and automatically adds those to the Add Excel data wizard. If there are no tables or named ranges in your worksheet, you need to manually select a cell range.

I received an error message when signing in to ArcGIS Online

Esri Maps for Office requires an ArcGIS Online account that is registered as part of an organization's subscription. You cannot use an ArcGIS Online personal account. If you try to sign in to ArcGIS Online with a personal account, the No ArcGIS subscription message appears notifying you that your account is not part of an ArcGIS subscription.

Can I share my spreadsheet or presentation with another Office user?

Yes! If you share a spreadsheet that contains a map with someone else who has Esri Maps for Office installed, they will be able to dynamically explore the map you created - even if they are not signed in! They will not have access to any features that consume credits, such as infographics, reports, or data enrichment, but they will be able to view and explore existing map layers.

If you create a map in Excel and share that spreadsheet with another user who does not have Esri Maps for Office, the map you created will be visible in the spreadsheet as a static image of the map. You will not be able to pan, zoom, or interact with the map.

Sharing maps in PowerPoint presentations works the same way.

How can I increase drawing performance?

Hardware acceleration is a process by which Esri Maps for Office uses your computer's graphics card instead of the central processing unit (CPU) to increase performance when drawing features. See the Hardware acceleration topic for more information.

Why doesn't my heat map display in ArcGIS Online?

Heat map layers and layers that are clustered cannot be shared to ArcGIS Online as a layer, but can be shared as part of a map. In the ArcGIS Online viewers (that is, the ArcGIS.com Map Viewer and ArcGIS Explorer Online), the heat map layer displays as a point layer instead of rendering as a heat map. When the web map is added to PowerPoint, the heat map layer displays as originally published from Excel.

I don't see an indication that my features are selected on the map.

On Windows Server 2008, graphic animations associated with hovering the mouse pointer over features and selecting features may not work if ArcGIS for SharePoint is installed.

The layer in my map is flashing.

If your Excel data contains coordinate values with more than eight decimal digits, the layer in the map may flash or flicker.

How do I set the language for Esri Maps for Office?

Esri Maps for Office uses the language specified in the Excel Options menu and not the operating system (OS) culture setting. To set the language in Excel, click the File menu and click Options. On the Options dialog box, select Language, and specify the language as desired.

Esri Maps for Office doesn't recognize my PivotTable when adding data

When adding data, the Esri Maps for Office Add Excel data wizard attempts to recognize tables and named ranges in your spreadsheet. If possible, it will also recognize existing PivotTables in the spreadsheet. If the PIvotTable contains an unsupported data type or has a hierarchy or more than one row label, it is not recognized by the Add Excel data wizard.

Cell formatting is not preserved when sharing to ArcGIS Online

Cell formatting such as double or datetime may not be preserved in pop-ups when sharing a map or layer to ArcGIS Online. In these cases, Esri Maps for Office publishes the value in the cell and not the formatted string so that additional analysis can be performed on the value if desired.

When using the Select tool, nothing happens after I click View Selected Records

View Selected Records currently only works for data that is on the same worksheet as the map. If the map is on a different worksheet than the source data, you will not be able to use the View Selected Records functionality.

Can I add a Bing basemap to my map?

Bing Maps are road and aerial maps developed and administered by Microsoft that you can use to provide a background for your data. As of version 2.0, Esri Maps for Office no longer provides complimentary use of Bing Maps, but you may continue to use Bing Maps basemaps if you have your own account and key. The user interface to add a Bing Map has been removed from Esri Maps for Office in version 2.0. Bing Maps basemaps must be configured online by the administrator of your ArcGIS Online organization account.
