The map was compiled from a variety of sources from several data providers. The basemap has global coverage down to a scale of ~1:144,000. In the United States, Japan and parts of Europe coverage is provided down to ~1:18,000. In select areas of the United States and a few European countries, coverage is provided down to ~1:9,000.

This dark version of World Hillshade is especially useful in building maps that provide terrain context while highlighting feature layers and labels.
