Use secure services

When opening a map that contains secure services or layers, you are prompted for credentials (user name and password) to get access. If you don't have or provide valid credentials that grant access, the map loads without the secure data.

Using ArcGIS Server secure services

Maps containing ArcGIS Server services secured using token or basic/digest HTTP security prompt the user to connect to the service if they haven't already connected to that server. If no or invalid credentials are provided, the map loads without that layer. These credentials are stored for the lifetime of the app. If you close the app, then reopen and return to a map with a secure service, you will be prompted for the credentials again.

To load a map and view an included ArcGIS Server secure service, take the following steps:

  1. Open a map containing an ArcGIS Server secure service.
  2. As the map loads, you will be prompted for credentials for the secure service.
Screen shot of the authentication prompt.
  3. Provide your user name and password, and tap submit to load the service in the map. Tap cancel to skip this service. Check the Don't ask me again check box if you do not want to be prompted for credentials on this server again during this run of the app. Otherwise, if your credentials are invalid, you will be given three chances to provide valid credentials.
  4. Once valid credentials are provided, the map loads and displays the secure service.
  5. If your credentials were not provided or were invalid, you see a message that the secure ArcGIS Server service layer could not be loaded.
Screen shot of unavailable layers message.

Using hosted or federated secure layers

Secure hosted and federated layers prompt the user to log into the app if they haven't already. If a user has no access to the secure layer, the map loads without that layer. To load a map and view an included secure hosted or federated layer, take the following steps:

  1. Open a map containing a secure hosted or federated layer.

If you are already logged into the app, the map opens. If your logged in user has access to the secure hosted or federated layer, it displays. Otherwise, it will be left out of the map.

  2. If you are not logged into the app, as the map loads, you will be prompted to log in.
Screen shot of the sign-in page.
  3. Provide your user name and password, then tap sign in to load the layer in the map. Press the Back button to cancel and skip this layer. Check the Remember me? check box if you want the app to remember these credentials for future runs of the app.
  4. Once valid credentials are provided, the map loads and displays the secure layer.
  5. If your credentials were not provided or were invalid, you see a message that the secure layer could not be loaded.
Screen shot of unavailable layers message.
