Account troubleshoot

Listed below are issues you may encounter when signing up or signing in to your account. If you don't find the problem you are looking for, and you are a member of an organization, send your issue to your administrator and request that they contact Esri Support. If you have a public account, you can access these self-service resources: GeoNet and the ArcGIS Online blog. You can also contact Customer Service.

I haven't signed up. What can I do?

You can create a public account. Once you've created your account, you can sign in to the ArcGIS Online website and access other aspects of ArcGIS Online. You can also use it to access Esri web resources such as My Esri and GeoNet. From the website, click the Sign In link on the upper right, or access the sign in page directly from https://www.arcgis.com/home/signin.html. Click the Create a Public Account button. You are redirected to a page to create a new account. You can only create an organizational account if the administrator of an organization invites you to join the organization.

I want to change my contact information.

You can change your name through your profile. If you have a public account, you change your email address through your profile. Administrators can change member email addresses through the member profile page.

I received an email indicating I'd updated my account.

You receive an email notification when you modify one or more of the following: your name, password, security question, or who can see your profile.

My ArcGIS account doesn't work on My Esri or GeoNet.

Your administrator needs to enable Esri Access on your account.

When I try to sign in to the website, I get the error Unable to sign you in to ArcGIS Online.

Did you sign in with the same password casing you used when you created your account? Your password is case sensitive. This is for added security to help protect your items stored in ArcGIS Online. If you continue to get the error, you should reset your password. (Esri cannot retrieve your password, so you will need to create a new one.)

Are you trying to sign in to an organization? You may not be authorized to access the site. For example, if the organization does not allow anonymous access, only members who have joined an organization can sign in.

I have registered my account with ArcGIS Online and verified the spelling of my user name and password, but I still can't sign in to the ArcGIS Online website.

If you have gone through all the troubleshooting steps listed on this page and you still can't sign in, contact Customer Service. In your email, explain the steps you've taken to register or sign in and include screen captures if possible.

I can't sign in to a different ArcGIS Online account from ArcGIS Desktop.

You may have enabled the option for ArcGIS Desktop to save your login information. To undo this and use a different account, click File > Sign In and click Forget me. Now you can sign in with a different account.

I forgot my password or I want to change it.

Esri can't retrieve and send you an existing password because your password is encrypted for added security. If you forget your ArcGIS password or want to change it, you can create a new one from the website.

You can also reset your password starting from the profile page.

If you sign in to your organization with an enterprise login, contact your enterprise identity provider for information on how to reset your password.

If you sign in to ArcGIS with an account you created using social network credentials, contact your social network provider for information on how to reset your password.

I forgot my user name or my user name doesn't work.

If you forget your user name or find that it doesn't work, you can send a request for an email that lists all the user names associated with your email address.

Note:

For ArcGIS accounts you created using social network credentials, the user name returned in the email is the one ArcGIS assigned for that account. If you need to verify the user name you use to log in directly to your social network account, contact your social network provider.

I am having trouble setting up multifactor authentication on my account.

Verify the following requirements:

I can't sign in to my organization with multifactor authentication even though I successfully set it up on my profile.

Check that your profile still shows that your account is enabled for multifactor authentication. If the administrator disabled multifactor authentication for the organization, your account will lose multifactor authentication (your profile will show it as disabled). If your organization is enabled for multifactor authentication and you still can't sign in, ask your administrator to disable multifactor authentication on your account so you can sign in with just your user name and password. If you want, you can send your request through the Having trouble signing in? page. Access the page directly from https://www.arcgis.com/home/troubleshoot.html or, from the website, click the Sign In link on the upper right and click the Forgot username or password? link. One of the designated administrators will receive an email notification that you've requested they disable multifactor authentication on your account. Once you have successfully signed in, you should reenable multifactor authentication. If you continue to have trouble with the codes, visit the support resources of your authentication app.

I want to change the device or authentication app I'm using for multifactor authentication.

Disable multifactor authentication on your account and reenable it with your new device or authentication app.

What are the different types of ArcGIS accounts and where can I use them?

If you have this type of accountYou have access to these resourcesNotes

Organizational account (can be an enterprise login or an account created with social network credentials)

Your organization, ArcGIS apps, ArcGIS for Developers

Your administrator can enable Esri access on your account, which gives you access to Esri web resources.

Public account (can be created with social network credentials)

ArcGIS Online website (with limits on use), My Esri, GeoNet, and other Esri web resources

An Esri Account is automatically a public account. You can use your public account to create an organizational account. It becomes an organizational account and all your content moves to the organization.

Esri Account

ArcGIS Online website (with limits on use), My Esri, GeoNet, and other Esri web resources

An Esri Account is automatically a public account. You can use your public account to create an organizational account. It becomes an organizational account and all your content moves to the organization.

Developer account

ArcGIS for Developers

When you upgrade your developer account, it automatically becomes an organizational account.

What is the difference between an Esri Account and an ArcGIS public account?

There is no difference. You can use either account to access the public features of ArcGIS, My Esri, GeoNet, and other Esri web resources. Your Esri Account is automatically enabled as a public account; you do not need to register it before signing in to ArcGIS.

I want to delete my account.

If you want to delete your organizational account, contact your administrator. Your administrator will need to move any items you own to a different member of the organization before removing your account. Once your account is removed, you will no longer have access to your organizational account or any content or groups you previously owned. If the organization prevents anonymous access, you will not be able to access the organization site. Your content and groups stay with the organization and can be reassigned to other members. If you were added or joined with an ArcGIS account that is enabled for Esri access, your account is still available to use with Esri web resources such as My Esri and GeoNet. You can also use it as a public account (but you will not have access to any of your content or groups that became associated with your organization). If you want your account deleted from the Esri system, contact Customer Service. If your ArcGIS account is not enabled for Esri access, it is removed from the system and you can no longer access it, even if it was one you had created before joining the organization. If you were added or joined with your enterprise login or your social network credentials, your login is no longer available to use with the organization or with Esri web resources. Enterprise logins can still be used with your enterprise. Accounts created with social network credentials can still be used with your social network.
